The National Population Commission (NPC) has witnessed a smooth leadership transition as outgoing Chairman Nasir Isa Kwarra officially handed over to Muhammad Usman Dattijo, the Federal Commissioner representing Niger State, who will serve as acting Chairman.

The handover ceremony, held at the NPC headquarters in Abuja, was attended by Federal Commissioners, senior staff, and members of the Directorate-General, highlighting the commission’s commitment to continuity and institutional stability.

In his farewell remarks, Kwarra thanked his colleagues for their support during his five-year tenure. He reflected on key achievements under his leadership, including the strengthening of data collection systems, digitisation of civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS), and preparatory work for the upcoming National Population and Housing Census.

“I am confident that the NPC will continue to deliver on its mandate under new leadership,” Kwarra said.

Dattijo, the acting Chairman, expressed readiness to ensure uninterrupted operations and to maintain momentum on ongoing initiatives, pending the formal appointment of the new substantive Chairman, Aminu Yusuf.

Observers note that accurate population data remains critical for national development, informing policy decisions in education, health, infrastructure, and social services. The transition comes at a time when the NPC is focused on modernising registration systems and preparing for the next nationwide census.
