Swiatek Survives Italian Open Scare as Sabalenka, Paolini Advance in Rome
Defending champion Iga Swiatek battled through a tough challenge to reach the third round of the Italian Open on Friday, overcoming American qualifier Caty McNally in a tense three-set contest.
The world number one recovered from a second-set collapse to secure a 6-1, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3 victory at the Foro Italico in Rome.
Swiatek looked in complete control early in the match after dropping the opening game before winning six consecutive games to comfortably take the first set.
However, McNally mounted an impressive comeback in the second set, breaking Swiatek twice as the Polish star attempted to serve out the match before forcing and winning a tie-break to level the encounter.
The three-time Rome champion regained composure in the deciding set, breaking early for a 3-1 lead. Although McNally fought back to draw level at 3-3, Swiatek responded strongly by winning the final three games to close out the match.
“It was a tough match. Caty really played great,” Swiatek said after the victory.
“I had to be patient. I’m really happy I was solid at the end and in the important moments.”
Swiatek will next face either Emma Navarro or Elisabetta Cocciaretto for a place in the last 16 as she continues her pursuit of another clay-court title.
Elsewhere, world number one Aryna Sabalenka opened her campaign in dominant fashion with a straight-sets victory over Barbora Krejcikova.
Sabalenka cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win to advance comfortably into the third round as she seeks her first Italian Open title.
“I’m super happy to be through. She’s a great player,” Sabalenka said.
“I’m happy with the level I played and to get this tough win.”
The Belarusian star will now face Sorana Cirstea in the next round.
Meanwhile, defending women’s champion Jasmine Paolini staged a spirited comeback to defeat Leolia Jeanjean 6-7 (4/7), 6-2, 6-4.
Paolini, who is aiming to become the first Italian woman to successfully defend the Rome title, admitted the match was filled with momentum swings but expressed satisfaction with her performance.
“This match was a bit of up and downs,” Paolini said.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Alexandra Eala progressed to the next round with a straight-sets victory over Wang Xinyu.
In the men’s draw, attention is turning to Novak Djokovic, who is set to make his first clay-court appearance of the season against Dino Prizmic following his return from injury.
