Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Environment has sounded a red alert: from October 4 to October 8, 2025, heavy rains are expected to trigger flooding across 16 states and 39 localities nationwide.

The National Flood Early Warning Centre (NFEWC) issued the forecast on Saturday, urging swift action from state governments, agencies, and communities.

The Forecast & Affected Areas

According to the flood alert—signed by Usman Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood & Coastal Zone Management Department—the areas most at risk include, but are not limited to:

Delta State: Asaba

Yobe State: Damaturu

Sokoto State: Isa

Zamfara State: Anka, Bungudu, Gusau, Kaura‑Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi

Katsina State: Jibia

Oyo State: Kisi, Oyo

Kebbi State: Ribah, Sakaba, Yelwa

Kano State: Gwarzo, Sumaila, Karaye

Niger State: Kontagora, Mashegu, Mokwa, New‑Bussa, Rijau, Wushishi

Kwara State: Kosubosu

Benue State: Agaku, Buruku, Gboko, Katsina‑Ala, Ugba

Borno State: Briyel

Bayelsa State: Brass, Ikpidiama, Odoni

Cross River State: Edor, Ikom

Rivers State: Itu, Ahoada

Enugu State: Nsukka

Stakeholders have been urged to begin activating mitigation strategies immediately: clearing drains, ensuring water channels are unobstructed, and preparing evacuation plans for vulnerable areas.
