In a significant move to bolster Nigeria’s indigenous automotive industry, the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Olajumoke Omoniyi Oduwole, has opted for a vehicle assembled at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) as her official car.

During a recent visit to UNILAG’s Akoka campus, Dr. Oduwole commissioned a locally assembled vehicle, underscoring her commitment to supporting Nigerian-made products.

The vehicle, produced at the Nord Automobile Complex within the university, aligns with the federal government’s drive to promote local manufacturing and reduce dependency on imported goods.

Dr. Oduwole emphasized that her decision is in line with the government’s policy to encourage the use of locally assembled vehicles among public officials.

This initiative aims to stimulate the domestic automotive industry, create jobs, and conserve foreign exchange. She noted that the move also serves as a testament to the capabilities of Nigerian institutions in producing high-quality vehicles.

The Nord Automobile Complex at UNILAG, established in collaboration with the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), has been instrumental in advancing Nigeria’s automotive sector.

The facility not only assembles vehicles but also engages in research and development, contributing to the growth of the nation’s industrial base.

Dr. Oduwole’s choice reflects a broader commitment by the federal government to promote the use of Nigerian-made products, as previously advocated by figures such as Senator Ireti Kingibe, who has called for the mandatory use of locally assembled vehicles by government officials.

This policy is expected to drive economic growth and enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian industries on the global stage.
