Judicial Interference Scares Investors Away – Ex-President Jonathan Warns Nigeria

In a pointed advisory, the Nigerian presidency has cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan against re-entering the 2027 presidential race, labeling the renewed calls for his candidacy as mere political maneuvering by self-serving interests.

The presidency’s statement underscores that these political actors are not motivated by genuine concern for national progress but are instead seeking to exploit Jonathan’s stature to further their personal agendas. “They merely want to lure you into the race to satisfy personal interests,” the statement asserts.

This cautionary note comes amid mounting speculation about Jonathan’s potential return to frontline politics. While some political figures have urged him to consider a comeback, others have expressed reservations.

Former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani advised Jonathan against recontesting, highlighting the current fragmentation of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its diminished cohesion since his tenure.

Similarly, PDP chieftain Dan Ulasi criticized the idea of Jonathan’s return, suggesting that his potential candidacy could inadvertently benefit the incumbent President Bola Tinubu, given the existing political dynamics.

On the other hand, Chief Dele Momodu, a former presidential aspirant, acknowledged Jonathan’s potential to challenge President Tinubu but questioned whether the former president would be willing to re-engage in the political arena, given his contentment with his past achievements.

In light of these developments, the presidency’s warning serves as a reminder of the complex and often self-serving nature of political endorsements, urging Jonathan to carefully consider the motivations behind those advocating for his return to the political stage.
