Grand Coronation: Ladoja Becomes 44th Olubadan of Ibadan

Ibadan awoke to a new dawn when Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja ascended the revered throne as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. His coronation marks not just a traditional rite, but the culmination of decades of leadership, political struggles, and cultural loyalty.

From chemical engineer to senator, governor, and now monarch, Ladoja’s life is deeply intertwined with Ibadan’s story.

Here are ten key things you should know about the new Olubadan.

10 Things to Know About Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja

1. He was born and bred in Ibadan.
Oba Ladoja was born on September 25, 1944, in Gambari, Ibadan. He attended Ibadan Boys’ High School before moving on to Olivet Baptist High School. His roots remain firmly in the soil of Ibadan, making his rise to the throne a homecoming in every sense.

2. He is a trained chemical engineer.
Ladoja studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Liège in Belgium between 1966 and 1972. This international academic background shaped his problem-solving mindset and global outlook, qualities he carried into business and politics.

3. He has served as both senator and governor.
Long before wearing the crown, Ladoja was a major political player. He was elected Senator in the short-lived Third Republic in 1993, and later became Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2006. Though impeached during his tenure, he successfully challenged the decision in court and returned to office—a testament to his resilience.

4. His rise follows Ibadan’s unique succession ladder.
Ibadan’s monarchy is unlike most. Succession rotates between the Otun (civil) and Balogun (military) lines. With the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Ladoja, who was the Otun Olubadan and highest-ranking on that line, automatically became next in line.

5. He wore a beaded crown before becoming Olubadan.
In August 2024, Ladoja accepted the beaded crown as Otun Olubadan under the revised chieftaincy law. The law stipulates that only chiefs with beaded crowns can eventually become Olubadan. Though initially controversial, this move paved the way for his coronation.

6. He is a seasoned businessman and philanthropist.
Outside politics, Ladoja has managed successful businesses and engaged in philanthropy. He is respected for his efforts to bridge divides within Ibadan and to uplift the less privileged.

7. His coronation was a grand cultural event.
The coronation ceremonies ran through the week of September 22, 2025, with cultural displays, interdenominational services, and lectures. The final crowning at Mapo Hall drew traditional rulers, politicians, and global attention.

8. Citizens expect modernization under his reign.
Prominent scholars like Professor Toyin Falola have argued that Ladoja’s reign should bring modernization to Ibadan—better infrastructure, cleaner environments, and stronger cultural preservation. Citizens expect him to use his political experience to push Ibadan forward.

9. He succeeds Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.
The 43rd Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin, passed away in July 2025 at the age of 90. After the traditional mourning period, Ladoja’s nomination was endorsed by the Olubadan-in-Council and approved by Governor Seyi Makinde.

10. He is a rare mix of politician and monarch.
Unlike many traditional rulers, Ladoja brings decades of frontline political experience to the palace. Having been both a governor and senator, he embodies a rare blend of modern statecraft and cultural stewardship. This dual identity is why many believe his reign could redefine the role of traditional rulers in Nigeria.

What This Means Moving Forward

Oba Ladoja’s coronation represents more than continuity—it signals the fusion of tradition with modern political and economic knowledge. As Ibadan stands at the intersection of culture and development, all eyes are on the new Olubadan to see how his reign will shape the city’s future.
