Peter Obi Honoured In Georgia After Talks On Energy, Democracy

The State of Georgia in the United States has conferred honorary citizenship on former Nigerian presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Obi, who disclosed the development in a statement on Thursday, described the recognition as the highlight of a day filled with engagements on democracy, energy, and African development.

According to him, the day began with the Congressional Black Caucus Week Reception at the U.S. Senate Kennedy Caucus Room, hosted by Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock. He noted that Senator Warnock encouraged him to speak on issues concerning African democracy and development.

The former Anambra governor later held talks with Georgia Power, the state’s largest independent power company, where he discussed energy generation and distribution with its Chief Executive Officer, Kim Clark.

“My conversation with the company’s CEO, Ms. Kim Clark, was deeply insightful,” Obi said, noting that the firm generates and distributes over 20,000 megawatts of electricity nationwide.

Obi also participated in the One Voice Africa event, a forum that advocates for the dignity of Black immigrants. At the gathering, he urged participants to take greater interest in promoting governance across Africa, stressing that the continent’s potential remains immeasurable if led by visionary and responsible leaders.

He described the conferment of the honorary citizenship of Georgia as a symbolic moment, stating: “Finally, the highlight of the day was the conferment of Honorary Citizenship of Georgia on me by the State of Georgia. For me, the day’s events were about learning, serving, and remaining committed to building a new Nigeria that is truly possible.”

The recognition marks another milestone in Obi’s global engagements since the conclusion of Nigeria’s 2023 presidential elections, where he contested under the Labour Party.
