The Oyo State Government has dismissed reports that crude oil was discovered in a well at Yemetu, Ibadan, saying the substance found is diesel-like and not crude oil.
A statement released on Tuesday clarified that while a liquid was detected in a well in the Omikunle area of Yemetu, further analysis is underway to determine its exact nature.
Earlier reports had sparked excitement and concern among residents after videos and messages circulated on social media alleging that crude oil had been found.
The police and Ministry of Environment have been involved in investigating the well, collecting samples for lab tests.

While the security agencies remain on site, the state government has urged calm, stressing that definitive conclusions will await scientific verification.
It reiterated that until tests are completed, any claims of crude oil discovery are unsubstantiated.
