IGP Tasks Border Patrol Commanders on Preventing Cross-Border Crimes

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, on Friday met with Border Patrol Commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he issued fresh directives aimed at strengthening security along Nigeria’s borders.

During the meeting, the police chief charged the commanders to intensify efforts in preventing cross-border crimes, stressing that patrol operations must focus more on intelligence gathering and proactive measures rather than reactive responses.

Egbetokun also urged the adoption of modern security technology, including surveillance systems and biometric tools, to boost patrol efficiency.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration with other security agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service, Immigration, and intelligence units in order to effectively curb smuggling, human trafficking, and illegal arms movement.

The IGP further assured the officers that their welfare and morale remain a priority under his leadership, noting that motivated personnel are crucial to achieving lasting border security.

The directives come as Nigeria continues to face challenges of porous borders, which have been exploited by criminals for illegal trade and other cross-border activities.
