Saudi Arabia has officially declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the day for the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr, following the non-sighting of the crescent moon marking the end of Ramadan.

The announcement was confirmed on Wednesday via HaraminInfo, which stated that the Shawwal moon was not sighted, thereby completing the 30 days of fasting before the festival.

“The crescent moon has NOT been sighted in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, Eid Al-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, 20th March 2026,” the statement read.

Nigeria awaits Sultan’s declaration

In Nigeria, Muslims are now awaiting an official announcement from the Sultan of Sokoto, who traditionally confirms the sighting of the moon and declares the end of Ramadan in the country.

The Sultan, regarded as the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims, is expected to make a formal statement after receiving verified reports from moon-sighting committees across the country.

End of Ramadan in sight

Eid-el-Fitr marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection observed by Muslims worldwide.

With Saudi Arabia’s declaration setting the tone globally, many countries often align their celebrations accordingly, although final decisions may depend on local moon sightings.

As anticipation builds, millions of Muslims in Nigeria and beyond are preparing for the festivities, which include prayers, charity, and communal celebrations.
