Chelsea F.C. have been fined £10.75 million ($14.27 million) and handed a suspended one-year transfer ban following historical breaches of league regulations, the Premier League announced on Monday.

The London club has also been issued an immediate nine-month ban on registering academy players, adding to the disciplinary measures imposed by the league.

Violations linked to previous ownership

According to the Premier League, the sanctions relate to historical rule violations uncovered after the club’s takeover by a consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly in 2022.

The group acquired Chelsea from Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, ending nearly two decades of ownership.

During the post-takeover review process, the new ownership reportedly shared information with the Premier League regarding past regulatory breaches, prompting the league’s investigation and subsequent disciplinary action.

Impact of the sanctions

The suspended one-year transfer ban means Chelsea could face restrictions on signing new players if further breaches occur within the specified monitoring period.

Meanwhile, the nine-month academy transfer ban will immediately limit the club’s ability to recruit young players into its development system.

The Premier League said the penalties were imposed in line with its disciplinary framework and were based on the findings from the investigation into the club’s historical compliance with league rules.
