OPay has dismissed reports claiming its offices in Lagos and Abuja were sealed by the Nigeria Revenue Service over alleged tax violations, describing the claims as false and misleading.

The fintech company said in a statement on Thursday that all its offices across Nigeria remain open and fully operational, adding that its services to customers, partners, and merchants have continued without interruption.

The clarification follows widespread reports on social media alleging that the tax authority shut down OPay’s offices due to non-compliance with Value Added Tax (VAT) and Company Income Tax obligations under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.

OPay, however, insisted it remains fully compliant with all applicable tax and regulatory requirements.

“Our offices across Nigeria, including Lagos and Abuja, remain open and fully operational, and we continue to serve our customers, partners and merchants without disruption,” the company said.

Tax notice linked to industry directive

According to OPay, the notice referenced in the reports was not directed at the company alone but stemmed from an industry-wide directive issued by the Nigeria Revenue Service to payment platforms.

The directive requires digital payment operators to separately display certain statutory charges on their applications to improve transparency and simplify reconciliation processes.

OPay noted that the instruction affects multiple operators across the financial technology sector and should not be interpreted as evidence of tax non-compliance.

“The suggestion that the notice indicates non-payment of taxes is factually incorrect and misleading,” the company stated.

Firm criticises selective reporting

The company also criticised what it described as the selective targeting of OPay in media reports, arguing that the directive concerns the broader payment industry.

According to the fintech firm, portraying the development as a sanction against OPay distorts the facts and risks damaging the company’s reputation.

OPay said it continues to work closely with regulatory agencies to ensure its operations meet all statutory standards.

Commitment to Nigeria’s digital economy

Reaffirming its commitment to the country’s financial ecosystem, OPay said it remains focused on providing secure, reliable, and inclusive financial services to millions of users across Nigeria.

The company urged the public to disregard claims suggesting it has shut down operations, emphasising that its business activities across the country remain unaffected.
