The Cross River State Government has announced a 20-day end-of-year leave for all civil and public servants, encouraging full participation in Christmas and New Year celebrations across the state.
The directive, outlined in circular GO/HOS/4/Vol.III/277 and issued by the Head of Service, Mr. Orok Okon, was made available to newsmen.
According to the circular, all workers—except those on essential duties—are expected to be on leave from December 15, 2025, to January 5, 2026.
The circular states, “This approval is to enable civil and public servants to actively participate in the Christmas festivities within the State.
Officers on essential duties are exempted and must remain at their posts to ensure uninterrupted delivery of critical public services. Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Departments should communicate this directive to all staff and ensure full compliance.”
The leave period coincides with one of the state’s most anticipated events: Carnival Calabar, widely regarded as the largest street party in Africa.
This year marks the 20th edition of the annual carnival, a cultural celebration established in 2005 under the Donald Duke administration.

Officials believe granting civil servants this extended leave will not only allow them to enjoy the festive season but also actively engage in the state’s rich cultural and social events, boosting community participation and tourism.
