Mourinho Denies Real Madrid Contact Amid Coaching Speculation
Jose Mourinho has dismissed reports linking him with a return to Real Madrid, insisting there has been no contact between him and the Spanish giants.
Speaking on Friday, the current Benfica coach addressed growing speculation that he could be among candidates to take over at Madrid this summer.
“No one from Real Madrid has spoken to me. I can guarantee that,” Mourinho said. “I’ve been in football for so many years, and I’m used to these things… but there’s nothing from Real Madrid.”
The 63-year-old tactician previously managed Madrid between 2010 and 2013, famously winning the 2011/2012 La Liga title during an intense rivalry with Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona.
Reports have suggested Madrid could make a managerial change following a disappointing season under current boss Alvaro Arbeloa, with the club on course to finish without a major trophy for a second straight year.
Madrid, led by president Florentino Perez, currently trail La Liga leaders Barcelona by 11 points with just five matches remaining. Their struggles have been compounded by a Champions League quarter-final exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.
Despite the rumours, Mourinho reaffirmed his commitment to Benfica, stating he still has one year left on his contract with the Portuguese side.
“I have a year to go on my Benfica contract, and that’s all,” he added.
Mourinho’s comments are likely to cool speculation about a potential reunion with Madrid, as the club continues to weigh its options ahead of the next transfer window.
