The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it held an interactive meeting with different factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday, 19 December 2025, as part of its efforts to promote strict adherence to Nigeria’s electoral laws ahead of upcoming polls.
According to the Commission, the engagement was prompted by multiple letters received from various groups within the PDP, all seeking INEC’s intervention on internal party matters. The meeting provided an opportunity for the Commission to engage party leaders collectively and address the concerns raised.
Speaking at the meeting, INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, said the Commission acted within its constitutional and statutory responsibility to monitor the activities of political parties, in addition to its mandate of conducting elections. He emphasized that INEC’s decisions and actions are always guided by these legal obligations.
Professor Amupitan informed the PDP leaders that the Commission has already released its timetable and schedule of activities for the forthcoming elections, assuring stakeholders that preparations are progressing as planned to ensure credible and orderly polls.
He also drew attention to key elections scheduled for 2026, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections slated for 21 February. The INEC Chairman stressed the importance of early engagement with political parties to prevent procedural lapses and ensure full compliance with electoral guidelines.
INEC explained that the meeting was convened to encourage open dialogue, particularly in light of the conflicting communications received from the PDP. The goal, according to the Commission, was to foster mutual understanding and establish a clear direction that aligns with existing laws and regulations.
Professor Amupitan reassured party leaders that INEC would remain neutral and transparent in all its dealings, noting that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and the Commission’s regulations form the legal foundation of its operations.
