The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The move was initiated on Thursday during plenary at the Assembly complex, with the session presided over by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule.

During the sitting, the Majority Leader of the House, Major Jack, formally presented a notice detailing allegations of gross misconduct against the governor.

According to the lawmakers, the impeachment process is being carried out in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The notice outlined seven alleged acts of gross misconduct attributed to Governor Fubara.

These include the demolition of the Assembly complex without legislative approval, engaging in spending outside approved budgetary provisions, withholding funds meant for the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission, and refusing to comply with Supreme Court judgments affirming the financial autonomy of the legislature.

The notice was reportedly endorsed by 26 members of the Assembly, who maintained that the governor’s actions amounted to constitutional violations.

Addressing the House, Speaker Amaewhule stated that the notice of allegations would be officially served on Governor Fubara within the next seven days, as stipulated by law.
