Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has sounded an urgent alarm over his deteriorating health condition while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
In a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian Medical Council, Kanu’s legal representatives detailed concerns regarding inadequate medical treatment and restricted access to his private doctors.
According to Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the IPOB leader has been suffering from serious health issues, including heart complications and mineral deficiencies.
Ejiofor revealed that despite the severity of Kanu’s condition, the DSS has denied him access to his personal physicians and has failed to provide the full course of prescribed medication.
The lawyer noted that Kanu received only eight days’ supply of medication for a treatment that requires at least two weeks.
The letter also highlighted allegations that Kanu has been subjected to harsh treatment in custody. These include being denied access to his lawyer, threats to withhold his daily hour of fresh air, and being coerced to make statements under duress, which his legal team has challenged as inadmissible.

Kanu’s family and legal team have called on the Nigerian government to intervene immediately by transferring him to a medical facility equipped to handle his health needs and allowing unrestricted access to his private doctors.
They expressed concern that the current conditions in DSS custody pose a significant risk to his well-being.
The situation has drawn criticism from various quarters, with some accusing the administration of President Tinubu of neglecting Kanu’s health crisis.
Human rights advocates have also raised broader concerns about the treatment of detainees and access to adequate healthcare in Nigerian detention facilities.
As calls for urgent medical intervention grow louder, the Nigerian government’s response to Kanu’s health condition remains a critical issue to watch.
