The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced plans to reinstate the enforcement of the tinted glass permit across the country, citing growing security concerns and the misuse of tinted vehicles for criminal activities.

The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.

According to him, the enforcement will officially resume on January 2, 2026, pending the final outcome of a case currently before the court.

Hundeyin explained that the temporary suspension of the policy had been exploited by criminals, who now use vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass to conceal their identities while carrying out crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent acts.

He clarified that contrary to public speculation, the court never issued an order restraining the Police from enforcing the tinted glass permit law. Rather, the Police voluntarily suspended enforcement to give motorists enough time to regularise their documentation and comply with the legal requirements without undue pressure.

However, in light of recent security developments, the Force has deemed it necessary to reactivate the policy.

“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to inform the general public that enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy will resume pending the final determination of the matter before the court,” the statement read.

“This decision follows a thorough review of emerging security threats and the urgent need to protect lives and property. Recent incidents show a disturbing increase in crimes facilitated by vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass, making enforcement unavoidable.”

The statement further assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be conducted professionally and in line with the law. Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reiterated the Force’s commitment to respecting citizens’ rights while taking firm steps to enhance national security.

He also called on motorists who require tinted glass permits to obtain them through officially approved channels and ensure their vehicles meet legal standards ahead of the enforcement date.

The Police maintained that the measure is a proactive step aimed at curbing crime and improving public safety nationwide.
