Renowned Nigerian visual artist, Neec Nonso, achieved international recognition as a runner-up in the 2022 Vantage Point Photography Awards, organized by the Sharjah Art Foundation. The announcement took place during the opening of the 10th edition of the Vantage Point exhibition, which began on September 16, 2022, at Al Hamriyah Studios in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

Out of 66 artists selected from 34 countries, Nonso was one of four runners-up honored for their creative excellence. Each runner-up received a $1,500 prize, with the jury composed of acclaimed photographers Solmaz Daryani, Lamya Gargash, and Sohrab Hura.

Merging Art, Memory, and Technology

Neec Nonso, who was born in Anambra State in 1990 and currently lives in Lagos, is known for blending photography, augmented reality, and performance in his artistic practice. His work frequently examines themes like ancestral memory, spiritual symbolism, death, and political history, often using hand-painted dot patterns to reflect invisible dimensions or evoke sacred traditions.

His imaginative visual approach captivated the award jury, reinforcing how Nigerian voices are increasingly shaping the global narrative of fine-art photography.

Elevating Nigeria’s Artistic Reputation

Nonso’s selection continues a broader trend of Nigerian creatives gaining international prominence. His recognition at the Vantage Point Photography Awards adds to the growing list of accolades earned by Nigerian artists on the world stage, solidifying the country’s status as a powerhouse in contemporary visual arts.

His inclusion in such a prestigious competition highlights the cultural depth and experimental nature of photography emerging from Nigeria and the African continent more broadly.

A Career of Rising Achievements

Before receiving the Vantage Point honor in 2022, Neec Nonso had already made a name for himself within Africa’s art scene:

  • He was shortlisted for the Contemporary African Photography Prize in both 2023 and 2024.

  • In 2023, he joined the prestigious Prince Claus Mentorship Programme, further enhancing his reach in global artistic circles.

These milestones reflect Nonso’s consistent commitment to blending visual storytelling with cultural introspection.

Art That Resonates Beyond Borders

By addressing metaphysical themes and combining them with cutting-edge techniques, Nonso’s work transcends photography. His images do more than document—they challenge, provoke, and invite deeper contemplation. He represents a generation of Nigerian artists who use art not just as a form of expression but also as a platform for cultural dialogue and historical reflection.
