The Kwara State Government has strongly refuted claims by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi that bandits have taken control of nine out of the state’s 16 local government areas (LGAs).
Kwara Government’s Response
In a statement issued on Monday, Kwara State Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, described Obi’s allegations as “reckless and totally false.”
The government emphasized that no LGA in the state is under siege by bandits or terrorists.
Olukoju further accused Obi of spreading fake news through his social media platforms and requested that he remove the post to prevent unnecessary panic among the public.
The statement also urged citizens to avoid sharing unverified information that could cause confusion and psychological distress.
Peter Obi’s Original Statement
Obi had previously expressed deep concern over the security situation in Kwara and Kogi states, describing it as a national emergency.
He claimed that nine LGAs in Kwara—Baruten, Edu, Ekiti, Ifelodun, Isin, Kaiama, Oke-Ero, Patigi, and Irepodun—were under bandit control, with the assailants reportedly demanding food and drinks as ransom.
