Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has intensified political consultations with prominent opposition figures as preparations quietly begin for the 2027 general elections.

A senior source close to the former Kano State governor revealed that Kwankwaso is actively engaging leaders across various opposition parties in a bid to build a broad alliance capable of challenging the ruling party.

The source disclosed this in an interview with Leadership, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the discussions.

According to the insider, Kwankwaso has held conversations with key political actors, including Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Chibuike Amaechi, and top figures within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

These engagements, the source said, are part of ongoing efforts to explore the possibility of a unified opposition platform.

“Kwankwaso is reaching out widely. He is in talks with the ADC leadership, he has spoken with Obi, Amaechi, and also leaders within the PDP,” the source disclosed. “The goal is to see how all opposition forces can come together.”

The source added that discussions are still at an exploratory stage, with no final decisions taken, but emphasized that the momentum for collaboration among opposition leaders is growing.

Beyond party leaders, the source also claimed that respected national figures are lending moral support to the emerging opposition movement.

Among them is former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is said to be involved alongside other influential Nigerians unhappy with the performance of the current administration.

“It’s not just Obasanjo,” the source said. “Many leaders across the country believe Nigeria needs a change in direction. There is a general feeling that the government is underperforming.”

He noted that Obasanjo’s name frequently features in political discussions because of his readiness to publicly express his views on national affairs. “People mention Obasanjo often because he speaks his mind when others prefer to stay silent,” the source added.
