The 10th annual International Yoga Day, held on June 21, 2024, was commemorated with great enthusiasm and purpose in more than 120 countries across the globe. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Self and Society,” underscored the dual power of yoga to nurture individual well-being while promoting global unity, peace, and community resilience.

From bustling metropolises to remote villages, millions gathered in parks, stadiums, cultural centers, embassies, and yoga studios to participate in guided yoga sessions, workshops, health seminars, and cultural performances. The events were not only physical demonstrations of flexibility and breath control but also symbolic gestures of humanity’s shared aspiration for health, balance, and peaceful coexistence.

A Global Movement With Local Roots

Since its inception in 2015 following a United Nations resolution spearheaded by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, International Yoga Day has evolved into one of the most widely observed international days recognized by the UN. It draws participation from governments, civil society groups, health professionals, schools, and millions of yoga enthusiasts worldwide.

This year’s theme resonated deeply in the post-pandemic world, where societies continue to grapple with mental health challenges, social polarization, and environmental strain. By emphasizing both the inward and outward impact of yoga, the 2024 celebration sought to remind participants that healing must begin within but extend outward to strengthen social cohesion.

In India, where yoga originated thousands of years ago, the Prime Minister led a sunrise session attended by thousands in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, emphasizing yoga’s unifying force in a region long marked by conflict. “Yoga is India’s gift to the world. It is not just an exercise; it is a pathway to inner peace and societal harmony,” Modi stated during his address.

Africa Embraces the Message of Unity

In Nigeria, where interest in yoga has steadily grown in recent years, several public and private institutions organized events in Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Enugu. The Indian High Commission collaborated with local wellness organizations to host large gatherings that included youth groups, teachers, corporate employees, and public servants.

At Millennium Park in Abuja, a major session drew over 1,000 participants, including dignitaries, fitness experts, and schoolchildren. Ambassador Shri Balasubramanian, India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, highlighted the importance of yoga as a bridge between cultures. “Yoga teaches discipline, compassion, and balance—values that any society needs to flourish,” he said.

African yoga advocates also emphasized the cultural adaptability of the practice. Local instructors demonstrated how African dance movements, breathing patterns, and indigenous wellness philosophies could integrate with traditional yoga sequences, creating an inclusive approach tailored to African lifestyles.

Europe and the Americas Celebrate With Innovation

Across Europe, major celebrations took place in Paris, Berlin, London, and Rome. UNESCO Headquarters in Paris held a large public yoga session attended by diplomats, artists, and wellness advocates. In Germany, refugees and host communities jointly participated in sessions, using yoga as a peace-building tool.

Meanwhile, the United States saw participation in more than 300 cities. In New York City’s Times Square, thousands gathered on yoga mats to observe a massive yoga session beneath billboards and lights—a symbol of stillness amidst chaos. Sessions were also held in schools and prisons, underlining the accessibility of yoga as a tool for rehabilitation and stress management.

Latin American countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Chile took a celebratory tone, blending yoga sessions with music, indigenous ceremonies, and environmental campaigns. In Brazil, Capoeira dancers joined yogis in co-performances, showcasing the synergy between body awareness and cultural expression.

Asia-Pacific and Island Nations Emphasize Climate Connection

In Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, where communities face rising climate-related challenges, this year’s International Yoga Day connected the practice to environmental consciousness. Events in Bali, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea emphasized how yoga fosters mindfulness, gratitude, and a lifestyle of minimalism—key principles in addressing ecological crises.

In Australia, yoga sessions were held in both urban centers like Sydney and Melbourne, as well as Aboriginal communities, where traditional spirituality aligns closely with the holistic values of yoga. Several Pacific Island nations, including Samoa and Tonga, also organized virtual yoga events to accommodate remote participation and raise awareness on the mental health toll of climate anxiety.

Youth Engagement and Mental Health Focus

A significant feature of International Yoga Day 2024 was its focus on youth. With the World Health Organization (WHO) warning of rising teen stress, anxiety, and depression globally, yoga was presented as a preventive and therapeutic tool for mental resilience.

UNESCO and UNICEF partnered with education ministries in dozens of countries to promote “Yoga in Schools” programs. These initiatives introduced breathing exercises, short meditation routines, and body awareness practices into daily classroom routines. Early reports from pilot schools in Kenya, India, and the Philippines indicated improved student concentration, reduced behavioral issues, and higher emotional well-being scores.

Social media platforms were flooded with user-generated content, as young people shared personal stories, live sessions, and motivational quotes under trending hashtags like #YogaForSociety and #InnerPeaceGlobalChange.

Health Experts Endorse Yoga’s Societal Impact

Numerous health professionals and global agencies used the occasion to reinforce the science behind yoga’s growing popularity. The World Health Organization’s 2024 report endorsed yoga as an effective intervention for cardiovascular health, metabolic disorders, and anxiety—especially in aging populations.

Dr. Anika Verma, a public health specialist with WHO, emphasized that yoga’s biggest strength lies in its multi-dimensional benefits. “Unlike many forms of exercise, yoga nurtures physical flexibility, mental stability, and emotional clarity. This holistic approach is especially useful in today’s fast-paced, hyper-connected world,” she explained during a webinar held in Geneva.

Additionally, yoga was promoted as an affordable and scalable wellness intervention in low-income countries. It requires no expensive equipment and can be practiced in small groups or individually, making it an ideal tool in health promotion, especially in resource-constrained environments.

Toward a More Mindful World

As International Yoga Day 2024 concluded, the message was loud and clear: personal well-being cannot be separated from social responsibility. Practicing yoga for oneself ultimately radiates into the community—through greater patience, empathy, and mindful action.

With over 120 countries participating, the event showed the remarkable power of ancient wisdom to speak to modern challenges. Whether practiced in silence on a remote island or in the heart of a crowded city, yoga continues to evolve as a universal language of peace.

Looking ahead, organizers and governments are already planning ways to embed yoga more deeply into healthcare, education, and community development. The hope is that with consistent practice and policy support, yoga will not remain just an annual celebration, but a daily lifestyle choice for individuals seeking inner balance and global harmony.
