The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has clarified details about Nigeria’s new unified Tax Identification Number (Tax ID), emphasizing that it consolidates all previous tax numbers issued by both FIRS and state-level revenue services into a single, streamlined identifier.

According to the agency, individuals do not need to apply separately for the Tax ID, as their National Identification Number (NIN) automatically serves this purpose.

Registered companies, on the other hand, will use their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) RC number as their Tax ID.

The service confirmed that there is no requirement for a physical card, as the Tax ID is electronically linked to an individual’s or company’s existing identification records.

FIRS also urged Nigerians to ignore any misinformation circulating about the reform, stressing that the unified Tax ID is part of an effort to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability in the country’s tax administration system.

The service said, “The Tax ID unifies all Tax Identification Numbers previously issued by the FIRS and State Internal Revenue Services into a single identifier.

“For individuals, your NIN automatically serves as your Tax ID, while for registered companies, your CAC RC number is used. You do not need a physical card, as the Tax ID is a unique number linked directly to your identity.”

This move is expected to simplify tax processes and make it easier for authorities to manage and track tax compliance nationwide.
