The Federal Government has moved to calm public concerns following the decision by the US Department of State to evacuate non-essential personnel and their families from its embassy in Abuja.

In a statement on Thursday, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris insisted that Nigeria remains safe and stable, urging citizens and the international community not to panic.

The reassurance comes after the United States issued a fresh travel advisory citing security concerns across parts of the country, including risks linked to crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest.

The US government also temporarily suspended visa appointments at its Abuja embassy, while confirming that operations at the Lagos consulate would continue.

Despite the warning, the Nigerian government maintained that the advisory does not reflect the overall security reality in the country.

“While we acknowledge isolated security challenges in some areas, there is no general breakdown of law and order, and the vast majority of the country remains stable,” Idris said.

He explained that the US action was largely precautionary and based on internal security protocols rather than a comprehensive assessment of conditions nationwide.

According to the minister, ongoing military operations, intelligence-led interventions, and enhanced inter-agency collaboration have continued to yield positive results in tackling insecurity.

“Our security agencies are actively working to protect lives and property, and their efforts are producing measurable improvements across affected areas,” he added.

The Federal Government also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding residents and visitors, stressing that Nigeria remains open for business, tourism, and investment.

While acknowledging the right of foreign governments to issue travel advisories, Idris urged international partners to engage Nigerian authorities for accurate and up-to-date information.

He further assured that efforts to strengthen security across the country would be sustained, with a focus on ensuring long-term stability and public safety.
