In a decisive move against child marriage, the Enugu State Police Command, working alongside the Ministry of Gender Affairs, has arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly marrying a 13-year-old girl in Amufie, Enugu Ezike, located in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area.

The arrest followed the circulation of a viral video on X (formerly Twitter) that showed what appeared to be an elaborate wedding ceremony involving the underage girl.

Authorities report that the girl’s parents, along with a woman identified as Ezenwanyi—believed to have orchestrated and facilitated the union—are also in police custody following widespread public complaints.

The incident has sparked outrage both locally and on social media, with many citizens condemning the act and urging stricter enforcement of laws protecting children from abuse and early marriage.

In response to the arrest, the Concerned Igbo-Eze North Youth Initiative (CINY) commended the swift intervention by the Enugu State Government, the Ministry of Gender Affairs, and the police.

“This action demonstrates the state’s dedication to protecting children’s rights and ensuring that laws against child abuse, exploitation, and child marriage are firmly upheld,” the group said in a statement.

Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that those found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
