Fresh concerns over the safety of former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan heightened on Thursday after a sudden military coup rattled Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday.

His family, however, moved swiftly to calm public fears, confirming that the former leader remains secure despite being unable to leave the country.

Speaking with Vanguard, Robert Azibaola, Jonathan’s cousin, disclosed that the former president had been in continuous communication with his family throughout the day.

He stressed that although Jonathan’s movement was restricted due to the unfolding political crisis, there was no immediate threat to his life.

“Jonathan has not been able to leave Guinea-Bissau, but he is safe. I have spoken with him several times today,” Azibaola assured.

“There is no danger to him. We remain in constant contact.”

Jonathan travelled to Guinea-Bissau as the Head of the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission, overseeing last Sunday’s presidential election. Tensions escalated dramatically on Wednesday when military officers announced they were taking control of the country, halting electoral processes following disputes over the polls.

The coup triggered widespread alarm both within Guinea-Bissau and across West Africa. With borders closed, sporadic gunfire reported in parts of the capital, and conflicting claims of victory emerging, diplomatic observers and citizens alike expressed growing concern for Jonathan’s welfare.

Nigerian authorities and West African stakeholders have been monitoring the situation closely as efforts to secure Jonathan’s safe exit continue amid the evolving uncertainty.
