Head coach Liam Rosenior has urged Chelsea FC to address recurring defensive lapses and disciplinary issues following their 2-1 loss to Arsenal FC in the Premier League.
Despite showing attacking intent and creating several clear chances at the Emirates Stadium, Chelsea were undone by two set-piece goals, with Arsenal defenders William Saliba and Jurrien Timber finding the net from corner kicks.
Rosenior expressed frustration over his side’s inability to defend dead-ball situations, noting that such errors continue to cost the team valuable points.
“We conceded two goals from set-plays, which has ultimately cost us the game. It’s really disappointing,” he said in a post-match interview.
The defeat was further compounded by a red card shown to winger Pedro Neto, who was sent off after receiving two quick yellow cards. Rosenior described the dismissal as a major setback, especially as Neto had been a key attacking threat before his exit.
The coach also warned that the suspension would weaken the squad ahead of their next fixture against Aston Villa F.C..
“It’s not just Pedro; as a group, we have to take accountability for our discipline and decision-making,” Rosenior added, stressing that repeated red cards are becoming a deeper concern within the team.
Chelsea’s disciplinary record has been a growing issue this season, with the club accumulating seven red cards in the Premier League so far, and even more across all competitions.
While Arsenal’s efficiency from set-pieces — with 16 goals from dead-ball situations this season — highlights their strength, Rosenior insisted Chelsea must focus on correcting their own shortcomings rather than blaming opponents.
“It’s a focus and concentration issue that we need to fix. If we solve these problems, we can become a very strong team and achieve our goals,” he said.
The loss adds pressure on Chelsea to quickly regroup, as defensive organisation and discipline continue to threaten their campaign ambitions.
