Senate President Godswill Akpabio has lauded President Bola Tinubu for his recent appointments of new service chiefs, describing the move as “timely” and crucial for strengthening Nigeria’s security apparatus.
Speaking during plenary following the President’s official communication to the Senate, Akpabio emphasized the importance of swift confirmation by lawmakers to ensure the new military leadership begins work without delay.
The shake-up includes:
* Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff
* Waheedi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff
* Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff
* Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff
Emmanuel Undiendeye remains Chief of Defence Intelligence.
The appointments come amid ongoing security challenges across Nigeria, including insurgency, banditry, and separatist unrest. Analysts have said the leadership changes signal the government’s intent to revitalize the armed forces and improve operational efficiency.
Akpabio stressed that the move should enhance coordination within the military and bolster efforts to safeguard lives and property nationwide. While the appointments have been widely welcomed, security experts note that leadership changes must be supported with adequate resources and strategic planning to achieve tangible improvements.
