The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has appealed to Nigerians to rally behind the party as it intensifies efforts to promote accountable governance and credible leadership across the country.
The appeal was made on Monday in Abuja by the party’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chairman, Yusuf Tijani, at an event marking the formal reception of rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, who recently joined the ADC.
Speaking to journalists at the party’s secretariat, Tijani described Yesufu’s defection as a major addition that strengthens the party’s vision and reach. He said the ADC is focused on building a leadership structure that prioritises grassroots development, transparency and democratic ideals.
According to him, Nigeria’s persistent governance challenges since the return to civilian rule in 1999 stem largely from self-interest and lack of accountability among those entrusted with power.
“A leader who fails to take care of the people cannot truly be called a leader. Leadership is about service. What has held Nigeria back is selfishness and greed among those in authority,” Tijani said.
He stressed that the ADC promotes modest leadership and responsible use of public resources, adding that the party believes a better Nigeria is achievable through service-driven governance.
Tijani also revealed that the party has continued to attract influential figures from across the country, noting that a former Senate President recently joined the ADC. He said Yesufu’s entry has further increased the party’s national visibility and appeal.
In her remarks, Yesufu criticised the current political establishment, describing it as fearful and disconnected from the people.
“They try to project power they no longer possess. What we see instead is fear and insecurity from those who know their time is running out,” she said.
She added that the ADC represents a coalition of determined Nigerians who are confident in their ability to reclaim governance and restore public trust.
Also speaking at the event, the ADC Chairman in Gwagwalada Area Council, Afahibada Danjuma, welcomed Yesufu to the party and expressed confidence in the ADC’s chances in the upcoming FCT Area Council elections slated for February 21, 2026.

“With dedication and collective commitment, we are confident of victory in the 2026 FCT Area Council elections,” Danjuma said.
