The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of one of its personnel in a tragic attack while on internal security duty in the Imota area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The incident took place on Monday in the Agbowa community along the Ikorodu Expressway, according to reports. The soldier, who was trying to manage a tense situation, was struck on the head with a heavy log by an individual described as mentally unstable.

In a statement on Tuesday, Lt. Col. Musa Yahaya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 81 Division, explained that the soldier was overpowered before receiving the fatal blow. “The situation was quickly brought under control by other soldiers at the scene, who neutralized the attacker and recovered the soldier’s weapon,” he said.

The injured soldier was immediately taken to Ikorodu General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Following his death, he was laid to rest according to Islamic rites, with his commanding officers and fellow soldiers in attendance.

Lt. Col. Yahaya confirmed that the 81 Division has launched a full-scale investigation into the incident to determine if any operational or procedural lapses contributed to the tragedy. “We are examining all circumstances surrounding the attack to ensure accountability and learn from this incident,” he said.

The Army extended condolences to the family and colleagues of the fallen soldier, describing him as a dedicated serviceman who served the nation with honor. Authorities also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified reports and to exercise caution, emphasizing the importance of reporting suspicious activities to security agencies.
