2027 Stakes: El-Rufai Says Democracy at Risk, Urges Opposition Unity

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has warned that if Nigerians fail to unite and remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by 2027, Tinubu risks becoming “president for life.” El-Rufai made the remarks amid growing political tensions and calls for opposition coalitions ahead of the 2027 elections.

He alleged that the current administration is exhibiting characteristics reminiscent of authoritarian rule, claiming that it is centralising power in ways that threaten democratic norms. “All the signs are there,” El-Rufai said.

Speaking during a meeting with opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, El-Rufai emphasised that unity among opposition parties and citizens is essential to counter what he described as democratic erosion. He asserted that without such cooperation, the political machinery could become entrenched, leading to a prolonged presidency beyond constitutional term limits.

El-Rufai’s warning comes as part of a broader push among opposition leaders to present a united front in 2027. He criticised past promises from aspirants who pledge one-term presidency limits, arguing that credibility is crucial and empty promises are no longer acceptable.
