UAE Moves to Document Iran Attacks for Possible Legal Action

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced plans to establish a national committee to document alleged Iranian attacks during the recent Middle East conflict, in a move aimed at supporting potential legal proceedings at both domestic and international levels.

According to state media reports on Thursday, the committee will be responsible for recording and monitoring incidents linked to what the UAE described as “military actions associated with Iranian aggression.”

The development follows earlier calls by Abu Dhabi for Iran to provide reparations for damages sustained during the hostilities.

During the conflict, several key infrastructure sites across the UAE were reportedly affected, including parts of Dubai’s luxury Palm Jumeirah development, as well as airports and energy facilities. Authorities say the country was targeted by more than 2,800 drones and missiles launched from across the region.

The UAE government said the newly formed committee will compile a comprehensive evidence dossier that will support legal efforts aimed at holding those responsible accountable.

“The outcomes of the committee’s work will contribute to supporting the UAE’s legal efforts at both the national and international levels by preparing a comprehensive documentation file,” state news agency WAM reported.

Last month, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that Iran should be held responsible for the destruction caused during the conflict, insisting that accountability and reparations were necessary.

The ministry had stated that the attacks “necessitate a firm position, including ensuring that Iran is held accountable and fully liable for damages and reparations.”

The conflict has had significant economic implications for the UAE, disrupting parts of its oil export activities and challenging its long-standing reputation as a regional safe haven and global financial hub.

Officials say the documentation initiative is part of broader efforts to safeguard national interests and strengthen the country’s legal position in the aftermath of the war.

Fani-Kayode Explains Redeployment to South Africa, Denies Germany Rejection Claims

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved his redeployment as Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to South Africa following his request to be moved from Germany.

Fani-Kayode disclosed that he personally requested the redeployment shortly after his initial posting to Germany, explaining that he preferred to serve in a country that aligns more closely with his political convictions, pan-African ideals, and worldview.

According to him, South Africa’s position as Africa’s largest economy and its strong historical ties with Nigeria influenced his decision to seek the diplomatic reassignment.

“I expressed that I would rather serve in a country that shares some of my convictions, beliefs and values when it comes to world affairs,” he stated.

The former minister said he submitted the request just two days after the original announcement and credited Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, for conveying the request to President Tinubu, who subsequently approved it.

Fani-Kayode also thanked Senator Sam Enang, who was initially posted to South Africa, for agreeing to a direct swap that would see him take up the ambassadorial role in Germany instead.

The former minister strongly dismissed reports claiming that Germany rejected his appointment, describing the allegations as false, malicious, and politically motivated.

According to him, no formal communication rejecting his appointment was ever issued by the German government.

“Germany never formally rejected me. That story was a complete fabrication based on hearsay, beer parlour talk and cheap gossip,” he said.

Fani-Kayode accused an unnamed online publication of deliberately spreading false information to embarrass him, the Federal Government, and President Tinubu.

He further revealed that the matter has been reported to security agencies and that his legal team has been instructed to commence a defamation suit against the publication responsible for the report.

The ambassador-designate expressed optimism about his new diplomatic assignment, describing South Africa as a country he deeply admires because of its “remarkable and inspiring history.”
