Sevilla Slide Toward Relegation After Late Defeat to Osasuna
Sevilla FC slipped deeper into relegation danger in La Liga after suffering a dramatic 2-1 defeat away to CA Osasuna on Sunday.
The visitors looked set to secure a crucial result when Neal Maupay fired them ahead in the 69th minute. However, Osasuna mounted a late comeback, with Raúl García equalising before Alejandro Catena struck deep into stoppage time to seal all three points for the hosts.
The defeat leaves Sevilla 18th on the table, just below the safety line and one point behind RCD Mallorca, who occupy 17th place.
Reacting after the match, defender Gabriel Suazo admitted the result was a heavy blow but insisted the team remains determined to fight for survival.
“I have a knot in my throat,” he said. “We must keep going. There are five finals left, and we’ll give everything for this club.”
Relegation battle intensifies
Elsewhere, Elche CF boosted their survival hopes with a 2-1 win over Real Oviedo, moving up to 13th place—though still only three points clear of the drop zone.
The relegation fight remains wide open, with just six points separating mid-table Athletic Bilbao in 10th from Sevilla in 18th, setting up a tense finish to the season with five rounds remaining.
Oviedo, however, are in deeper trouble, sitting seven points from safety with limited games left to turn their fortunes around.
Title race and European push
At the top of the table, FC Barcelona strengthened their grip on the title with a 2-0 victory over Getafe CF, extending their lead to 11 points ahead of rivals Real Madrid CF.
Meanwhile, third-placed Villarreal CF are set to face RC Celta de Vigo, with both sides still eyeing European qualification.
With the season entering its final stretch, Sevilla’s survival hopes now hang in the balance as pressure mounts in one of La Liga’s most unpredictable relegation battles in recent years.
