The Federal Government has approved a ₦10 billion housing loan scheme aimed at expanding access to home ownership for Nigerian civil servants, in a move designed to strengthen workforce stability and productivity.

Announcing the initiative in Abuja on Friday, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, said the scheme will be implemented in collaboration with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board.

According to her, the intervention is part of a broader strategy by the administration of Bola Tinubu to improve the welfare of public servants while enhancing efficiency across government institutions.

“The ₦10 billion housing loan scheme is designed to make home ownership more accessible for civil servants, ultimately improving their stability and productivity,” Walson-Jack stated.

She highlighted the direct link between secure housing and workplace performance, noting that employees with stable living conditions are more focused, motivated, and committed to service delivery.

Beyond welfare, the initiative forms part of ongoing civil service reforms focused on building a more modern, technology-driven public sector. Walson-Jack revealed that efforts are underway to transition the service into a digital, paperless, and transparent system that prioritises accountability and innovation.

She also stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration in driving these reforms, citing contributions from key institutions such as the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Budget Office, and the Office of the Accountant General.

Describing the programme as a reflection of the government’s governance philosophy, she said: “A well-supported civil servant is a more effective civil servant, and that ultimately translates to a stronger Nigeria.”

As Nigeria approaches Workers’ Day on May 1, Walson-Jack noted that this year’s celebration carries added significance, with civil servants beginning to see tangible evidence of improved recognition and support.

She commended public workers for their resilience and dedication, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring better welfare, enhanced capacity, and a more rewarding career structure for civil servants nationwide.
