Passengers Injured as Abuja–Kaduna Train Derails After Mid-Journey Incident
Several passengers sustained injuries on Monday morning after a train operating on the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor was involved in a disruption that forced the service to halt midway through its journey.
The passenger train, travelling from Kaduna to Abuja in Nigeria, failed to reach its destination as scheduled following the incident along the busy rail line linking the Federal Capital Territory with Kaduna State.
Panic as train stops abruptly
Passengers on board said the situation occurred suddenly, sending shock through several coaches as the train came to an abrupt halt.
Some travellers reported hearing a loud bang before the train jolted violently, throwing passengers from their seats and causing confusion inside the compartments.
According to eyewitness accounts, the Abuja-bound train may have collided with another train along the corridor, prompting a temporary suspension of rail operations while the situation was assessed.
Injuries reported among passengers
Several passengers reportedly suffered cuts and bruises after being flung against seats and metal fittings inside the train.
A passenger, Sada Malumfashi, who said he was on board, described the frightening experience shortly after leaving the train.
“We heard a loud bang and the train jolted to a stop, flinging people across. Passengers got hit and many were bleeding and severely injured,” he wrote on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
He added that the train remained stationary for about 30 minutes before slowly continuing toward Kubwa, on the outskirts of Abuja.
Authorities confirm incident
A source within the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the incident but spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to comment publicly.
NRC spokesperson Callistus Unyimadu also acknowledged the development, stating that an official statement would be issued to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Abuja–Kaduna rail line is one of Nigeria’s busiest passenger routes and serves as a critical transport link between the Federal Capital Territory and northern parts of the country. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the disruption as passengers and commuters await further updates.
