Major Education Reform: Polytechnics to Begin Awarding Degrees

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to scrap the long-standing Higher National Diploma (HND) dichotomy, announcing a sweeping reform that will allow polytechnics across the country to award degrees.

The policy shift was made public on Wednesday in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, during a high-level retreat attended by governing council chairmen, education commissioners, rectors, registrars and bursars of polytechnics nationwide.

Describing the decision as historic, Alausa said the reform would finally address decades of systemic discrimination against polytechnic graduates while strengthening the role of technical and vocational education in Nigeria’s development agenda.

He explained that the initiative is designed to reposition polytechnics as top-tier institutions within the higher education ecosystem, without sacrificing their long-established focus on practical, industry-oriented training.

“This is a transformative step that will give polytechnic education the recognition it deserves, while retaining its strong hands-on and skills-based foundation,” the minister said.

According to Alausa, the reform aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places strong emphasis on employment generation, industrial expansion and human capital development. He noted that for Nigeria to remain competitive globally, the country must develop a workforce capable of innovation, production and problem-solving — a role he said polytechnics are uniquely positioned to play.

With the introduction of degree-awarding status, the minister said polytechnics would be better placed to attract industry collaborations, access improved funding and gain increased public trust. He assured stakeholders that the transition would be carefully managed through clearly defined standards, effective regulation and strong quality assurance frameworks to ensure international relevance and competitiveness.

Speaking on the retreat’s theme, “Transforming Polytechnic Education in Nigeria: Innovation, Good Governance and Sustainability for National Development,” Alausa described polytechnics as the backbone of a skills-driven economy.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Education has placed Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) at the centre of its reform strategy to produce graduates who are industry-ready, innovative and economically productive.

The minister encouraged polytechnic administrators to embed innovation through entrepreneurship hubs, applied research centres and deeper engagement with industry. He identified key growth areas such as renewable energy, agri-technology, digital manufacturing and climate-resilient technologies as priority sectors for research and development.

On institutional management, Alausa stressed that transparency, accountability and ethical leadership must guide the new phase of polytechnic governance. He called for strict financial discipline, timely audits, responsible use of resources and zero tolerance for corruption.

He also highlighted sustainability as a critical goal, urging institutions to expand internally generated revenue through production, services and innovation. According to him, polytechnics should adopt eco-friendly campuses, invest in resilient infrastructure and contribute to national self-reliance by producing goods locally and reducing import dependence.

While acknowledging existing challenges such as inadequate funding, obsolete facilities and societal preference for university degrees, the minister said the benefits of the reform far outweigh the obstacles. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting polytechnics through policy changes, infrastructure development and strategic partnerships.

Alausa further announced that a special TETFund intervention has been approved for this year to modernise polytechnic engineering schools with advanced equipment, following a similar upgrade carried out in 12 medical colleges last year.

Urging participants to drive change within their institutions, the minister said the success of the reform depends on visionary leadership and collective action.

“The future of our youth, our economy and our nation rests on the transformation we begin today,” he said.

Education stakeholders at the retreat described the announcement as a game-changer for technical education in Nigeria, predicting that it would boost enrolment, improve staff morale and significantly enhance the contribution of polytechnics to sectors such as manufacturing, technology, agriculture and renewable energy.

Peter Obi Questions Officials Over Denied Kidnapping of Worshippers

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has challenged the credibility of those who initially dismissed reports of a mass abduction of worshippers in Kaduna State.

In a statement shared on his 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, the former Anambra State governor questioned the source of the information used by officials who had earlier described the reports as false. He also called for accountability, insisting that those responsible for the denial should face consequences now that the incident has been officially confirmed.

Obi stressed that beyond identifying those who misled the public, urgent and coordinated efforts must be made to secure the release of the abducted worshippers and ensure their safe return.

He criticized what he described as a lack of leadership and empathy, urging authorities to demonstrate through action that the lives of Nigerians truly matter.

“Now that it has been established that more than 150 worshippers were abducted from churches in Kaduna, it is important to ask: where did those who denied the incident get their information from?” Obi wrote.

He further questioned why individuals who were previously accused of spreading misinformation were threatened with punishment, asking who would now be held responsible for the false denial.

According to Obi, a situation of this magnitude should provoke swift national response, transparent communication, and visible leadership. He emphasized that leadership goes beyond the pursuit of power, noting that it also requires presence, compassion, and decisive action in moments of national distress.

Calling for immediate intervention, Obi urged the government to intensify efforts to rescue the victims unharmed and confront the country’s worsening insecurity head-on.

“Enough is enough,” he added, ending his statement with his familiar slogan: “A New Nigeria is POssible.”

The comments follow confirmation by the Nigeria Police Force that an abduction did take place in Kurmin Wali, a remote settlement in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The police said the confirmation came after detailed intelligence gathering and verification.

Adeleke Family Breaks Silence on Davido’s Alleged 12-Year-Old Daughter

Adedeji Adeleke, the father of Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has firmly denied claims that a 12-year-old girl, Anuoluwapo, is his son’s child.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos on Wednesday, the billionaire businessman said several DNA tests have already been conducted to determine the girl’s paternity, all of which reportedly showed that Davido is not her biological father.

Adeleke stressed that his son cannot be held responsible for a child that does not belong to him, while adding that Anuoluwapo deserves to know her real father.

Despite the negative DNA outcomes, Adeleke revealed that he has continued to offer financial assistance to the girl out of goodwill.

According to him, he regularly sends money to cover her school fees and general welfare. He added that Anu’s aunt usually acknowledges the funds by sending receipts and proof of items purchased for the child.

He further clarified that Davido is unaware of this support and that he personally handles the communication with the girl’s relatives.

“I did not discuss it with David or anyone else,” Adeleke stated.

The development follows recent public statements by Anuoluwapo, who had called for a DNA test to confirm her identity. She shared her request on Instagram, alongside a photo of herself, noting that she was resuming school after the holidays and transitioning into her teenage years.

Davido, however, had earlier dismissed the renewed claims, maintaining that several DNA tests had already been done with consistent results showing he is not the father. He urged Anu and her mother to stop linking him to the matter and advised them to seek out the girl’s biological parent instead.

Suicide Bombing in Borno’s Timbuktu Triangle Kills 5 Soldiers Amid Ongoing Military Operations

A suicide bomber driving an explosives-laden vehicle struck a military convoy in the notorious Timbuktu Triangle on Tuesday, killing five soldiers and injuring several others, including two senior officers—a major and a lieutenant—security sources confirmed to Daily Trust.

The attack occurred as troops were returning from a successful clearance operation in the area. One soldier described the incident as causing extensive damage to military vehicles and equipment deployed for ongoing operations.

“The attack caused significant destruction to our armoured and logistics vehicles used in weeks-long offensive and defensive operations,” a source said.

Another officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the casualties but emphasized that the mission would continue. “Yes, there were setbacks. We lost five soldiers, but Commander Manga is safe, and the operation continues,” he said.

The bodies of the fallen soldiers have been flown to Maiduguri, while the injured were evacuated for medical treatment.

The Timbuktu Triangle has long been a stronghold for insurgents, where, in past incidents, terrorists ambushed and killed senior military personnel, including Brigadier General Musa Uba. The latest attack comes just a day after troops of the Joint Task Force North-East (Operation Hadin Kai) announced significant gains in the area during Operation Desert Sanity.

On Monday, the task force reported that troops had cleared multiple terrorist camps and repelled drone attacks across the Timbuktu Triangle. Lt-Col Sani Uba, spokesman for the operation, said that several weapons, communications devices, Boko Haram/ISWAP flags, and logistical materials were seized during the clearance operations.

“Troops advanced across identified terrorist enclaves, including Chilaria, Garin Faruk, and Abirma, supported by air surveillance that enabled real-time tracking and precision strikes,” Lt-Col Uba stated. He added that despite armed drone attacks by insurgents, troops maintained momentum and forced the adversaries to withdraw.

Despite the ongoing confrontations, military officials report that troop morale remains high and operational effectiveness is intact. The security situation in the Timbuktu Triangle is considered calm but unpredictable, with soldiers maintaining heightened vigilance.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Urged to Follow NNPP Procedures Before Defection in Kano

The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has insisted that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf must adhere strictly to party procedures should he decide to leave the party.

Addressing journalists at a press briefing in Kano on Tuesday, the NNPP State Chairman, Senator Elmasud Doguwa, said the party would not obstruct the governor’s decision to defect, provided he follows the rules guiding party membership.

According to him, Governor Yusuf is required to submit a formal letter of resignation to the legally recognised NNPP before aligning with any other political platform.

Doguwa stressed that the party has no intention of forcing the governor to remain if he no longer wishes to continue under its banner, but noted that due process must be respected.

His comments come against the backdrop of widespread speculation that the governor, who won the 2023 election on the NNPP platform, may be considering a move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains a legitimate member of the NNPP, the party identified by the basket of fruits symbol,” Doguwa said. “We acknowledge him as our governor and as a member of our party. However, if he chooses to leave, that is his constitutional right. What we insist on is a formal resignation, which has not been submitted to us.”

He explained that while political affiliation is a personal choice, such decisions must align with the party’s constitution and established procedures.

The NNPP chairman also cautioned that bypassing the formal resignation process could attract legal implications, especially given the ongoing court cases surrounding the party’s leadership structure.

“In view of the judgments already handed down by three courts, any defection without a proper resignation from the bona fide NNPP may have consequences, particularly if the Supreme Court eventually rules in our favour,” he warned.

Doguwa reiterated that the current NNPP leadership in Kano is the legitimate authority based on existing court decisions. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold and enforce the judgments delivered by the courts.

Nancy Isime Silent Amid Allegations Over Circa Lagos Owner’s Marriage Collapse

Nigerian media personality and actress Nancy Isime has yet to respond to allegations linking her to the collapse of the marriage of Lagos-based businessman, Chinedu Nwobodo, the owner of Circa Lagos.

The claims were made by Ify Okafor, a Nigerian woman living in the United Kingdom, who accused Nancy Isime and former beauty queen Sylvia Nduka of allegedly being involved with her ex-husband during their marriage.

Okafor, who hails from Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State, shared the accusations in a detailed Facebook post recounting what she described as years of infidelity, abuse, and emotional distress.

According to Okafor, some of the alleged affairs occurred while she and Nwobodo were still legally and traditionally married.

She claimed the relationships caused deep emotional pain, embarrassment, and constant tension within her home.

Beyond infidelity, she alleged that her marriage was marked by repeated physical violence, emotional manipulation, threats, and controlling behaviour, which ultimately left her mentally and emotionally exhausted.

Okafor stated that the combination of cheating and abuse gradually eroded the foundation of the marriage, making the relationship unsafe and unstable until it eventually collapsed.

Despite the intense backlash and conversations the allegations have sparked across social media platforms, Nancy Isime has not publicly addressed the claims.

Instead, the actress recently returned to Instagram after a brief absence, sharing vacation photos that appeared to show her unfazed by the controversy.

Ebonyi APC Under Fire Over ₦30m LG Chairmanship Nomination Fee

The Ebonyi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ignited intense public debate after announcing a ₦30 million fee for aspirants seeking the party’s ticket for local government chairmanship positions.

The decision, unveiled by the state APC Chairman, Stanley Okoro Emegha, has been widely criticised by political observers, civic organisations and residents, who say the cost effectively excludes grassroots politicians and undermines democratic participation at the local level.

Emegha made the disclosure following a private meeting with party leaders drawn from Ebonyi’s 13 local government areas and 171 wards. He explained that the ₦30 million covers both the expression of interest and nomination forms for chairmanship hopefuls, while those contesting councillorship positions are required to pay ₦250,000.

According to the party timetable, forms for councillorship and delegate positions became available from January 8, while chairmanship aspirants are expected to purchase their forms between January 9 and January 19, in preparation for the local government elections scheduled for August 2026.

Salary Reality Raises Red Flags

The announcement has reignited long-standing concerns about the cost of politics in Nigeria, with critics pointing out that the fee dwarfs the legitimate earnings of a local government chairman.

Figures from the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) indicate that even over a full four-year term, the combined salary and allowances of an LG chairman would not amount to ₦30 million.

This disparity, analysts warn, creates dangerous incentives, as officeholders may feel pressured to misuse public funds to recoup campaign expenses, further eroding accountability and service delivery at the grassroots.

Social Media Uproar and Dynastic Politics Debate

Public reaction has been swift, particularly on social media, where many Nigerians have condemned the move as a shift from democratic competition to what they describe as “money-driven politics.” On 𝕏 (formerly Twitter), users questioned how ordinary party members could realistically compete under such financial barriers.

The debate intensified following reports that Osbourne Umahi, son of former Ebonyi State Governor and current Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, purchased the ₦30 million form to contest the chairmanship of Ohaozara Local Government Area.

While party leaders and supporters have praised the younger Umahi as capable and forward-thinking, critics argue that his emergence highlights how steep nomination fees naturally favour wealthy families, political dynasties and aspirants with access to powerful networks.

Fears of Exclusion at the Grassroots

Opponents of the policy warn that many qualified, community-focused individuals are being priced out of the political process, weakening competition and limiting voter choice at the local level.

They argue that local councils, meant to be the closest tier of government to the people, risk becoming inaccessible to the very communities they are supposed to serve.

Some APC officials have defended the pricing, insisting it is designed to discourage unserious aspirants and streamline the selection process.

However, the backlash reflects a broader national concern over the growing commercialisation of Nigerian politics, where the cost of securing party tickets for local offices increasingly rivals those of higher political positions in the past.

Court Summons Agodi Prison Doctor Over Health of Ex-NURTW Chairman, Auxiliary

An Oyo State High Court sitting at Ring Road, Ibadan, has ordered the medical doctor attached to the Agodi Custodial Centre of the Nigerian Correctional Service to appear before it on Wednesday to clarify the health condition of former Oyo State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi, widely known as Auxiliary.

The directive followed an unexpected disruption in proceedings on Tuesday when Auxiliary failed to appear before the court, despite having been brought to the court premises earlier in the day for his ongoing criminal trial.

Auxiliary, who previously served as Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the Oyo State Park Management System, was scheduled to take the dock before Justice Olusola Adetujoye of Court 11. However, when the matter was called, the defendant was nowhere to be found, triggering confusion and tense exchanges in the courtroom.

According to information gathered from court sources, Auxiliary arrived at the court looking physically stable and remained within the premises while other matters were being heard. His case was fixed for around 11 a.m., but shortly before the judge reconvened at about noon, attention shifted to the defendant as correctional officers and other individuals surrounded him.

Witnesses at the court said Auxiliary was suddenly reported to be unwell, prompting attempts to attend to him on the spot. Some individuals reportedly poured water on him while others rubbed balm on his body. Shortly afterward, officials from the Agodi Custodial Centre were contacted, and a vehicle was dispatched to the court.

Auxiliary was subsequently escorted out of the courtroom area by correctional officers, alongside family members and associates. Observers, however, expressed surprise when he was seen walking on his own into the waiting vehicle outside the court premises.

The situation sparked outrage when Justice Adetujoye returned to the courtroom and learned that the defendant had been taken away without the court’s knowledge. While addressing the court, defence counsel, Olalekan Ojo, SAN, informed the judge that his client had taken ill.

The court then sought clarification from the prosecution team, led by Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, O.S. Tella, who recounted what she observed during the incident in court.

Justice Adetujoye criticised the manner in which the situation was handled, stressing that the court ought to have been formally notified before the defendant was removed.

“Regardless of the circumstances, the court should have been informed by the correctional officers,” the judge stated.

With neither the prosecution nor the defence able to provide a satisfactory account of the events, the judge adjourned the matter to Wednesday, January 21. He further ordered the medical officer attached to the Agodi Custodial Centre to appear in court to give a detailed explanation of Auxiliary’s medical status.

The court ruled that if the defendant is medically certified to be unfit, a new date will be fixed for the continuation of the trial.

IGP Grants INEC Exemption From Tinubu’s Police VIP Withdrawals Order

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has approved the continued deployment of police officers to officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), notwithstanding President Bola Tinubu’s earlier directive ordering the withdrawal of police security personnel from VIPs and government officials.

Documents obtained and circulated online on Wednesday indicate that the approval grants INEC officials an exemption from the withdrawal order.

The affected officials include National Commissioners, Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), the Acting Director-General of the Electoral Institute, and INEC directors across the country.

The approval was communicated in an official letter dated January 8, 2026, with reference number CB:2032/IGP.SEC/ABJ/VOL.5/45.

The letter, signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the IGP, CP Lateef Adio Ahmed, was titled “Appeal for Exemption from Order to Withdraw Police Security Personnel Attached to VIPs.”

According to the correspondence, the decision followed a formal request submitted by INEC on December 11, 2025. The letter acknowledged receipt of the appeal and confirmed that the IGP had granted the exemption.

“I am to notify you that the Inspector-General of Police has graciously approved the request contained in the letter under reference,” the letter stated, while conveying the IGP’s assurances and regards.

President Tinubu had earlier instructed the Nigeria Police Force to withdraw officers assigned to VIPs and public officials as part of a broader reform aimed at curbing the misuse of police personnel and improving security at the grassroots level.

The directive was widely understood to apply across government institutions, with exemptions expected only for offices explicitly protected by the Constitution.

However, the IGP’s latest approval signals a formal exception for INEC, citing the Commission’s unique role in Nigeria’s democratic process.

INEC Confirms Exemption

INEC confirmed the development in a statement issued on January 19, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Dr Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

She disclosed that the Commission had written to the IGP in December to request an exemption from the withdrawal order.

According to the statement, the appeal was based on the sensitive and high-risk nature of INEC’s constitutional responsibilities, particularly election administration, as well as past incidents involving attacks on electoral officials and Commission facilities.

“The Commission had, in a letter dated 11th December 2025, appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to exempt it from the order to withdraw police security personnel attached to VIPs,” the statement read. “The request was informed by the sensitive nature of the Commission’s duties and the history of attacks on its officials and facilities.”
