Kaduna Police Dismiss Claims of Mass Kidnapping at Church in Kajuru
The Kaduna State Police Command has refuted claims that more than 100 worshippers were abducted by bandits during a church service in Kajuru Local Government Area, describing the report as entirely false and deliberately crafted to incite fear.
Reports had circulated on Monday, January 19, alleging that armed bandits stormed a church in Kurmin Wali village on Sunday and kidnapped worshippers during a service. However, state authorities have dismissed the story as baseless.
Speaking to journalists after a State Security Council meeting held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, the Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, said the allegation was a fabrication promoted by individuals seeking to destabilise the state.
He challenged those spreading the report to provide concrete evidence, including the identities of the alleged victims.
“Anyone making this claim should come forward with the names and details of the supposed kidnapped persons,” Rabiu said, warning that those peddling false information would be dealt with according to the law.
The Chairman of Kajuru Local Government Area, Dauda Madaki, also debunked the report, stating that he personally led a security team to the community after hearing of the alleged incident.
“When the report reached me, I immediately mobilised security agencies to Kurmin Wali. We visited the church mentioned, and there was no sign that any attack or kidnapping took place,” Madaki said.
He added that consultations with traditional leaders and youth representatives further confirmed that no such incident occurred.
“The village head, Mai Dan Zaria, confirmed there was no attack. The youth leader, Bernard Bona, also told the press team that nothing of that nature happened,” he explained.
Madaki challenged the originators of the story to present proof, insisting that no list of victims has been produced despite repeated demands. He suggested that the rumour may have been sponsored by individuals unhappy with the improving security situation in Kajuru.
“I believe some people are uncomfortable with the relative peace the area has enjoyed under this administration and are trying to create unnecessary tension,” he said.
He urged residents to remain calm, go about their lawful activities, and report suspicious movements or false information to security agencies.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Sule Shuaibu (SAN), said religious leaders had also verified the claims and found them to be untrue.
According to him, leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria visited the community, engaged with residents, and confirmed that the widely circulated report was false.

Shuaibu reassured residents of the state government’s commitment to security, stressing that Kaduna State maintains zero tolerance for criminal activities and that security agencies remain on high alert across the state.
