Kaduna Police Dismiss Claims of Mass Kidnapping at Church in Kajuru

The Kaduna State Police Command has refuted claims that more than 100 worshippers were abducted by bandits during a church service in Kajuru Local Government Area, describing the report as entirely false and deliberately crafted to incite fear.

Reports had circulated on Monday, January 19, alleging that armed bandits stormed a church in Kurmin Wali village on Sunday and kidnapped worshippers during a service. However, state authorities have dismissed the story as baseless.

Speaking to journalists after a State Security Council meeting held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, the Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, said the allegation was a fabrication promoted by individuals seeking to destabilise the state.

He challenged those spreading the report to provide concrete evidence, including the identities of the alleged victims.

“Anyone making this claim should come forward with the names and details of the supposed kidnapped persons,” Rabiu said, warning that those peddling false information would be dealt with according to the law.

The Chairman of Kajuru Local Government Area, Dauda Madaki, also debunked the report, stating that he personally led a security team to the community after hearing of the alleged incident.

“When the report reached me, I immediately mobilised security agencies to Kurmin Wali. We visited the church mentioned, and there was no sign that any attack or kidnapping took place,” Madaki said.

He added that consultations with traditional leaders and youth representatives further confirmed that no such incident occurred.

“The village head, Mai Dan Zaria, confirmed there was no attack. The youth leader, Bernard Bona, also told the press team that nothing of that nature happened,” he explained.

Madaki challenged the originators of the story to present proof, insisting that no list of victims has been produced despite repeated demands. He suggested that the rumour may have been sponsored by individuals unhappy with the improving security situation in Kajuru.

“I believe some people are uncomfortable with the relative peace the area has enjoyed under this administration and are trying to create unnecessary tension,” he said.

He urged residents to remain calm, go about their lawful activities, and report suspicious movements or false information to security agencies.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Sule Shuaibu (SAN), said religious leaders had also verified the claims and found them to be untrue.

According to him, leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria visited the community, engaged with residents, and confirmed that the widely circulated report was false.

Shuaibu reassured residents of the state government’s commitment to security, stressing that Kaduna State maintains zero tolerance for criminal activities and that security agencies remain on high alert across the state.

Police Arrest Suspect Over Destiny Boy’s Death

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the death of popular Afro-Fuji singer, Adesina Afeez, widely known as Destiny Boy.

According to reports, the police disclosed that the case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, to allow for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the artiste’s death.

Speaking on the development, the command’s spokesperson, Babaseyi Oluseyi, stated that investigations are already underway. He revealed that one individual is currently being detained while detectives continue to unravel the facts behind the incident.

“The Ogun State Police Command has commenced investigation into the death of Adesina Afeez, aged 22, popularly known as Destiny Boy. The matter has been transferred to the SCID, Homicide Section, for detailed investigation. One suspect is in custody as investigations continue,” Oluseyi said.

News of Destiny Boy’s passing became public on Sunday after disturbing videos circulated on social media, showing his lifeless body being transported to a mortuary. The footage sparked widespread mourning among fans and prompted speculation over the cause of his death.

One of the viral clips showed the late singer lying in the back of a vehicle, with cotton wool placed in his nostrils and ears. Another video later emerged featuring a man said to be close to the artiste, who attempted to clarify the situation.

The individual claimed Destiny Boy had been battling an undisclosed health issue prior to his death and that efforts were made to save him, but he eventually succumbed.

Born Afeez Adeshina, Destiny Boy began his musical journey at a young age and carved a niche for himself by fusing traditional Fuji rhythms with contemporary sounds. He honed his craft at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, where he also worked as a backup dancer for renowned Fuji musician Pasuma.

He rose to fame in 2019 after releasing a Fuji-inspired cover of Davido’s hit track If, which went viral and earned him widespread recognition. He later followed up with covers of songs by top artistes such as Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice and Small Doctor.

Among his original tracks are Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio Gbonkankan, and Lowkey. In November 2024, Destiny Boy and his partner, Iremide, welcomed their first child.

AFCON 2025: Nwabali Mocks Morocco After Senegal’s Extra-Time Victory

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali didn’t hold back in his reaction following Morocco’s 1-0 loss to Senegal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

Pape Gueye’s decisive goal in extra time handed Senegal the continental crown, but off-field antics, particularly involving goalkeeping towels, have dominated post-match conversations.

During the final, footage circulating online showed Moroccan players and stadium officials repeatedly taking towels meant to keep Senegal’s goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s gloves dry. The towels were tossed into the stands, appearing to be deliberate attempts to distract the Senegalese shot-stopper.

The scenes bore a striking resemblance to an incident in the semi-final between Nigeria and Morocco, where Nwabali himself fell victim to similar gamesmanship. The Super Eagles’ goalkeeper was forced to return to the bench multiple times after his towels were confiscated during the tense match.

Following Morocco’s defeat, Nwabali took to his 𝕏 account to taunt the Moroccans in pidgin English, referencing the towel incidents. “Make Una use all my towel Una carry wipe Una tears,” he wrote, poking fun at their frustration.

The towel saga continued in the final with Senegal’s reserve goalkeeper, Yehvann Diouf. Reports suggest that Moroccan ball boys attempted to snatch the towel Diouf held for Mendy, sparking a brief confrontation on the pitch. Despite the disruption, Senegal maintained their composure, with Diouf seen diligently guarding the towel throughout the match and even chasing off the mischievous ball boys.

Ultimately, Senegal’s focus paid off. The team held their nerve for 120 minutes, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory and lifting the AFCON trophy once again, while leaving the drama around towels and gamesmanship as one of the talking points of the tournament.

Ekiti 2026: INEC Clears 12 Parties for Governorship Race

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the final list of candidates cleared to participate in the Ekiti State governorship election scheduled for June 2026, confirming a crowded and competitive race featuring 12 political parties.

In a statement endorsed by INEC National Commissioner, Mrs Rose Oraran-Anthony, the electoral body confirmed that all approved governorship candidates will appear on the ballot with their respective deputy governorship nominees.

The commission also disclosed that the academic backgrounds of the candidates and their running mates vary widely, ranging from basic primary education to doctoral qualifications—a contrast that has generated public debate across the state.

INEC noted that the cleared candidates emerged from several political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), among others.

The incumbent governor, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, 58, will be defending his seat under the APC banner, maintaining his current deputy, Monisade Afuye, 67, as his running mate.

The Labour Party has nominated Olajuyin Ikusayede Gbegbe Oyebanji, aged 67, as its flagbearer, with legal practitioner Okumade Ayokunle Odumayo selected as deputy governorship candidate.

Adding a youthful dimension to the contest, the NNPP is presenting 35-year-old Abegunde Ayobami Blessing, signaling the increasing involvement of younger politicians in Ekiti’s electoral landscape. Similarly, the African Action Congress (AAC) has put forward Akande Oluwasegun Samuel, 36, with John Fajuyigbe Oluwasanmi as his deputy.

Other candidates cleared by INEC include Bejide Oluwadare Patrick (ADC), Ojo Ayodeji (ADP), Anifowose Joseph Olanrewaju (APM), Awogbemi Bidemi Olaiya (APP), Ayodele Olaniyi Olanrewaju Praise (PRP), Osinkolu Olusegun Ayodele (YPP), and Adetunji Victor Damilola (ZLP).

With the final list now public, political parties are expected to step up campaign activities ahead of the election. Analysts view the poll as a major gauge of public opinion in Ekiti State, especially against the backdrop of economic challenges, governance debates and rising youth participation in politics.

Diesel Tanker Overturns on Apapa Bridge, Residents Rush to Scoop Fuel

A diesel-laden tanker overturned early Monday on the Liverpool Bridge in the Apapa area of Lagos, triggering a dangerous scramble as residents rushed to the scene to collect spilled fuel.

The tanker, reportedly carrying about 45,000 litres of diesel, lost balance and fell on the bridge, causing its contents to leak onto the roadway. Despite the obvious risks, videos circulating online showed people arriving with jerrycans, buckets, and other containers to scoop the fuel directly from the damaged truck.

Emergency responders were quickly alerted to the incident. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, alongside rescue teams and police officers from Area B Command, were deployed to prevent a possible explosion or fire outbreak.

“There is a fallen tanker conveying diesel on Liverpool Bridge inward Mile 2,” LASTMA said in a statement shared on X. “The tank was ruptured, leading to diesel spilling across the bridge. Traffic has been redirected, and safety agencies are on ground managing the situation.”

To minimise risk, the affected section of the bridge was temporarily closed, and traffic was diverted using a counterflow system. Motorists were advised to expect delays as emergency workers worked to contain the spill and stabilise the area.

LASTMA later announced that the spilled diesel had been neutralised by the fire service, allowing the previously cordoned-off lane to be reopened. Traffic officials remain on site to manage congestion while waiting for a tow truck to evacuate the overturned tanker.

The incident once again highlights the recurring danger of fuel scooping in Nigeria. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), at least 411 people lost their lives across the country in 2024 while attempting to collect fuel from fallen tankers.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, previously disclosed that states such as Plateau, Abia, Kaduna, Kwara, and Ondo recorded the highest number of such fatalities. One of the deadliest accidents occurred in Jebba, Kwara State, where no fewer than 30 people died during a fuel scooping incident.

Contractors Clash With Security at Finance Ministry Over Alleged Unpaid Government Debts

Tensions flared on Monday at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja as indigenous contractors took to the streets to protest what they described as the Federal Government’s continued failure to settle outstanding contractual obligations.

The demonstrators, under the banner of the All Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria (AICAN), barricaded the ministry’s main gate, effectively halting both pedestrian and vehicular movement into the complex. The protest escalated shortly after the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, arrived at the premises.

Eyewitnesses said security operatives attempted to clear a path for the minister, but protesters stood their ground, leading to a heated confrontation. The standoff reportedly turned chaotic when a gunshot rang out as security personnel moved in to disperse the crowd.

The contractors accused the Federal Government of inconsistency and repeated delays in fulfilling payment commitments, arguing that the prolonged non-payment has disrupted project completion and delivery nationwide. They claimed that several projects, some already completed and officially commissioned by government representatives, remain unpaid.

According to the protesters, repeated assurances from government officials have failed to translate into action, leaving many contractors financially strained and unable to move forward with ongoing or future projects.

Monday’s protest follows similar demonstrations held last year, during which contractors demanded the immediate clearance of all verified debts owed by the Federal Government.

In response to the growing outcry, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in December 2025, directed the formation of a committee to examine contractors’ claims and resolve outstanding payment issues. The Senate also set up its own investigative committee and summoned the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to clarify the circumstances surrounding the alleged unpaid obligations.

Nigerian Army Sacks Soldier Over Boko Haram IED Video Leak

The Nigerian Army has reportedly dismissed one of its personnel following the circulation of a video linked to a deadly Boko Haram improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Borno State.

The soldier, identified as Private Mansur Adamu with service number 22NA/82/3795, was accused of secretly recording and leaking footage from the scene of the explosion, which occurred near Gubio about two weeks ago.

According to military sources cited by Sahara Reporters, the video—recorded shortly after the blast—surfaced on social media, prompting an internal investigation that led to the identification of the individual responsible. The army subsequently removed the soldier from service, citing strict rules against the unauthorized release of operational information.

A photograph later emerged showing the dismissed soldier holding a placard displaying his name and service number, a procedure commonly used during military disciplinary actions.

Naija News reports that the explosion claimed the lives of several soldiers who were on active duty at the time. The troops were travelling from Maiduguri when their vehicle ran into explosive devices allegedly planted by Boko Haram insurgents along the route near Gubio.

At least nine soldiers lost their lives as a result of the attack. Eight reportedly died a day after the incident due to injuries sustained in the blast, while another succumbed to wounds the following morning. Several others were seriously injured.

The affected personnel were members of the 145 Battalion in Damasak, operating under the 5 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Military sources emphasized that the army considers any form of internal leak a grave offence, especially during active counter-insurgency operations, and maintains a zero-tolerance policy for personnel found sharing sensitive information.

FCT Workers Shut Down Government Offices Over Unresolved Labour Issues

Activities at government offices across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were largely paralysed on Monday as workers began an industrial action declared by the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC).

The strike followed a notice issued by the unions last Friday, announcing their intention to shut down public offices within the FCT and its six area councils if their demands were not addressed.

According to JUAC, the action became inevitable after a seven-day ultimatum given to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) expired without any concrete response.

The ultimatum, which took effect on January 7, 2026, reportedly lapsed despite several meetings held between union representatives and the authorities during the period.

A statement dated January 8 and jointly signed by JUAC President, Comrade Rifkatu Iortyer, and Secretary, Comrade Abdullahi Saleh, confirmed the unions’ decision to withdraw services.

The notice was also copied to key government officials, including the Minister of State for the FCT, the Chief of Staff, the Head of Service, and the Director of Security Services.

JUAC explained that workers were instructed to down tools over what it described as the FCTA’s persistent neglect of labour and welfare-related concerns. Among the issues highlighted are unpaid promotion arrears, delays in staff promotions, and the continued retention of directors and permanent secretaries who are due for retirement.

The unions further accused the administration of failing to remit pension contributions and National Housing Fund deductions on behalf of workers. They also criticised the conduct of the 2024 promotion examinations, alleging that the exercise was poorly handled and negatively affected many candidates.

As of Monday, government activities across the FCT remained disrupted, with no indication yet of when normal operations would resume.

PDP, NNPP React as APC Refuses Automatic Tickets for Defecting Governors

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned that governors and political heavyweights who recently abandoned the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC) are only beginning to face the consequences of their decision.

The opposition party made this known while responding to reports that the APC has ruled out the automatic granting of second-term tickets to governors who defected from other parties. According to the PDP, this development confirms its long-held position that the defections were driven by personal ambition rather than the interests of the people.

Speaking on the matter, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the party was neither shocked nor disappointed by the APC’s stance. He described the situation as a predictable outcome for politicians who, in his words, placed selfish calculations above public service.

Among the governors who have recently crossed over from the PDP to the ruling party are Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Peter Mbah of Enugu, Agbu Kefas of Taraba, and Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.

In addition, the APC leadership in Kano State has hinted that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf may soon follow the same path. Beyond the governors, several lawmakers, former governors, ex-ministers and prominent PDP figures have also defected to the APC.

Ememobong said the PDP had consistently warned that such moves would not yield the political security defectors were hoping for. According to him, the APC’s refusal to offer automatic tickets exposes what he described as the party’s lack of loyalty to its members.

“This outcome was expected,” he said. “The APC does not truly value those who join it. These defectors will increasingly realise that they are seen as outsiders, with limited influence and no special consideration.”

He added that the political reality within the APC would soon set in, leaving the defectors disillusioned as their expectations fail to materialise. Ememobong also noted that voters in the affected states may eventually question the decisions of their leaders, especially if the defections lead to political instability or stalled development.

“The regret has only just begun,” he said, stressing that abandoning the party that supported their rise could have long-term consequences.

Meanwhile, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) echoed similar sentiments. Its National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, said the situation validated his party’s earlier warnings about the APC’s internal politics.

Johnson alleged that the ruling party often attracts politicians with promises that are rarely fulfilled. He recalled advising some officials in Kano State to carefully consider what guarantees they would have if they defected.

“In the APC, new entrants are often left exposed,” he said. “They lure you in, but once you arrive, the rules change. Before you know it, your political options are limited and exiting becomes difficult.”

According to Johnson, many defectors may soon find themselves frustrated as their ambitions are constrained by party dynamics that favour long-standing power blocs.

Both opposition parties insist that the unfolding situation serves as a cautionary tale for politicians who believe defection automatically guarantees political survival.
