The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, delivered the message of support on Wednesday as the Nigerian side prepared for the high-stakes encounter in Rabat. He commended the Eagles for their impressive run in the tournament, praising their discipline, courage, and collective belief on the pitch.

According to Idris, the entire nation is standing solidly behind the team as they take on one of the tournament’s toughest opponents.

Idris emphasized that the players are carrying far more than jerseys onto the pitch, stressing that millions of Nigerians will be watching and believing in them.

He encouraged the Super Eagles to remain focused, trust one another, and play with the mindset of champions from start to finish.

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have reached a landmark agreement following weeks of intense negotiations over the longstanding 2009 framework. The agreement was officially signed on Wednesday at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Conference Hall in Maitama, Abuja.

The ceremony was attended by key government officials, including the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, and ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna. Dignitaries hailed the signing as a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.

According to Dr. Alausa, the agreement marks a decisive step toward ending the decades-long cycle of disruptions caused by lecturers’ strikes in federal universities. He praised President Bola Tinubu for his political will in tackling the challenges facing the country’s university system.

“This is more than just a document; it represents renewed trust, restored confidence, and a turning point in Nigeria’s tertiary education history,” Alausa said. “For the first time, a sitting President has confronted this challenge directly, giving it the leadership attention it deserves.”

Prof. Chris Piwuna expressed cautious optimism that the government would honor the agreement, stressing the need for implementation without the threat of industrial action.

“We hope this agreement will be fully implemented without ASUU having to issue strike threats. While history makes us wary, we believe Dr. Alausa’s leadership will be different, and both parties remain committed to open dialogue,” Piwuna stated.

A key feature of the new deal is a 40% increase in academic staff salaries, approved by the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC), effective from January 1, 2026.

The revised pay structure includes the Consolidated University Academic Staff Salary (CONUASS) and an enhanced Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), which will support research, conference participation, professional memberships, internet access, and book development—critical tools to boost academic competitiveness and reduce brain drain.

The agreement also introduces a clear framework for nine Earned Academic Allowances, linked directly to academic responsibilities such as postgraduate supervision, fieldwork, clinical duties, examinations, and leadership roles.

Additionally, a Professorial Cadre Allowance was approved, granting full-time Professors N1.74 million annually (N140,000 monthly) and Readers N840,000 annually (N70,000 monthly) in recognition of their academic and administrative contributions.

Kano Suspends Three Health Workers Over Death of Patient With Forgotten Surgical Scissors

The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has taken disciplinary action against three healthcare workers following the death of Aishatu Umar, a patient who died during surgery to remove a pair of scissors that had earlier been left inside her body.

The Board confirmed that the tragic incident, which occurred on Sunday, was the result of medical negligence at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano. This was disclosed in an official statement issued by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman.

According to the statement, an initial investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, revealed that surgical scissors were mistakenly left in the patient’s body after a previous medical procedure. The error reportedly went unnoticed for months.

In response to the findings, the Board announced the immediate suspension of three medical personnel directly linked to the case. It also confirmed that the matter has been forwarded to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for a comprehensive review and possible sanctions in line with professional and legal guidelines.

Expressing sympathy to the bereaved family, the Board described the incident as deeply regrettable and assured the public that accountability would be enforced. It emphasized that acts of negligence within the healthcare system would not be tolerated.

Earlier reports revealed that Aishatu Umar had endured persistent and intense abdominal pain for several months after undergoing surgery at the same hospital in September 2025.

A family member, Abubakar Mohammed, said she repeatedly returned to the hospital seeking help as her condition deteriorated.

According to him, medical staff reportedly dismissed her complaints and prescribed painkillers without conducting thorough examinations. It was only days before her death that medical scans were finally carried out, leading to the shocking discovery of the forgotten surgical instrument.

Mohammed said the scissors were identified during the scan, prompting doctors to schedule a corrective surgery. Tragically, Umar did not survive the procedure.

Why Government Refuses Special Allowances for Resident Doctors – Health Minister

The Federal Government has clarified that existing civil service regulations do not provide for special allowances for resident doctors, who are officially classified as specialists undergoing training.

According to the government, the allowances and specialist recognition being requested by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) are benefits strictly meant for fully certified consultants, not doctors still in training.

This position was explained by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, as part of efforts to address ongoing disagreements between the government and resident doctors.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Alaba Balogun, Dr. Salako warned that granting the requested allowances to resident doctors could trigger similar demands across the health sector. He noted that other professional groups undergoing various stages of training might seek comparable benefits, a scenario the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission has already advised against.

The Minister also addressed claims that the Federal Ministry of Health is responsible for delays in the issuance of professional certificates. He explained that certification processes fall under the authority of independent regulatory bodies and are beyond the ministry’s control.

Dr. Salako clarified that the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), which regulates specialist medical training, does not issue certificates to doctors who have only completed Part I of their examinations. He emphasized that this policy is determined by the college and cannot be altered by ministerial directive.

“The allegation that the government is withholding certificates is incorrect. The Postgraduate Medical College does not award certificates after Part I examinations, and that policy is outside the purview of the ministry,” Salako stated.

Despite the disagreements, the Minister reassured that the government remains committed to resolving all genuine concerns raised by resident doctors within the limits of the law. He disclosed that negotiations with NARD have yielded progress, with unresolved demands reduced from 19 to nine.
