2027: “A Lot Of People Who Don’t Understand Politics Are Underrating Us“ – Kwankwaso
Former Kano State Governor and National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed confidence that the 2027 general elections will produce outcomes that many Nigerians do not expect.
Speaking to party supporters at his Miller Road residence in Kano, Kwankwaso dismissed claims that the NNPP lacks political weight, describing such views as a misunderstanding of Nigeria’s political terrain. According to him, some political actors have gone as far as belittling the party, referring to its members as inexperienced or insignificant.
Kwankwaso, however, insisted that the NNPP is far from weak, stressing that the party is organised, prepared, and determined to make a strong showing in the next general elections.
“Many people who do not truly understand politics are underrating us. Some even describe us as children. They will be shocked by the results we produce at the polls,” he said.
His remarks come amid growing political tension in Kano State following reports that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf may soon defect from the NNPP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor, who won the 2023 election under the NNPP platform, was initially expected to officially announce his move to the APC on Monday, January 5, 2026, before the date was reportedly shifted to January 12.
Sources familiar with the situation told The Whistler that Governor Yusuf appears undeterred by opposition from Kwankwaso and other key figures within the NNPP. The reports suggest that the governor has already made up his mind, despite strong resistance from his political base and longtime mentor.
An insider within the Kano NNPP revealed that relations between Kwankwaso and Yusuf have deteriorated significantly, reaching a stage where reconciliation may no longer be possible. The source noted that multiple unresolved issues have strained their alliance beyond repair.
One major factor influencing Yusuf’s decision, according to the source, is his desire to secure a second term in 2027 on what he believes is a stronger and more stable platform. The APC, he reportedly feels, offers better prospects compared to the NNPP.
Concerns about internal divisions, leadership disputes, and the uncertain future of the NNPP ahead of the next election cycle are also said to be contributing to the governor’s growing apprehension.
