Ex-Attorney General Abubakar Malami Remanded in Kuje

Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), has been remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre following his court appearance on Tuesday.

The remand order was issued by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja, directing that Malami, along with his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and associate Bashir Asabe, remain in custody pending the determination of their bail applications.

The trio faces a 16-count money laundering charge brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), with allegations involving billions of naira. During the court proceedings, Malami and his co-defendants pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Representing the defense was senior lawyer Joseph Daudu (SAN), while the prosecution was led by Ekele Iheneacho (SAN). After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Nwite adjourned the case to January 2, 2026, specifically for the bail application hearing.

The EFCC’s charge, filed under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/700/2025, claims that Malami, his son, and Asabe violated provisions of the Money Laundering Act. According to the commission, the accused allegedly used Metropolitan Auto Tech Limited to disguise the origin of N1,014,848,500 held in Sterling Bank Plc, as outlined in the first count of the 16-count charge.

The final count also accuses Malami of purchasing multiple high-value properties, including:

* 28 Bagudu Kaltio Crescent, Gwarimpa, Abuja

* Plot 13, Ipent 7 Estate, Abuja

* A plaza with commercial toilets, laundry facilities, and warehouse tanks near Birnin Kebbi Market

* 100 hectares along Birnin Kebbi–Jega Road

* Plot 157, Lamido Crescent, Nassarawa Road GRA, Kano

The EFCC alleges that these assets were acquired using funds derived from unlawful activities.

Yahaya Bello Declares 2027 Kogi Central Senate Bid Against Senator Natasha

Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has officially declared his intention to contest for the Kogi Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

Bello made the announcement during a visit to the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, where he engaged with traditional leaders, religious figures, and community stakeholders from the senatorial district. The former governor also shared a video of the visit and his declaration on his verified Facebook page on Monday.

“I accept to run for the Senate in 2027,” Bello stated while addressing the gathering.

The Kogi Central seat is currently held by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Elected in 2023 to Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly, Akpoti-Uduaghan made history as the first female senator from Kogi State.

Bello, who governed Kogi State from 2016 to 2024, remains a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is widely seen as a key player in the state’s political landscape.

In response to Bello’s announcement, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan appeared unfazed. During an appearance on the Mic On Podcast, she described herself as a formidable opponent and dismissed the notion that Bello poses a threat.

“If I decide to contest and ex-Governor Yahaya Bello is on the ballot, I say bring it on. Scared of who? He’s not my nightmare; if anything, I’m his political nightmare,” she said confidently.

The senator also addressed recent controversies surrounding her constituency projects, acknowledging claims that some of them were removed. “Yes, someone removed my projects,” she confirmed, without elaborating further.

Jake Paul Responds After Anthony Joshua Survives Fatal Car Crash in Ogun State

American YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul has shared his condolences following a serious road accident involving Nigerian-born British heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in Ogun State, Nigeria.

Recall that the incident occurred on Monday afternoon, December 29, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Joshua was traveling with friends who had accompanied him to Nigeria for the New Year festivities when the accident happened.

Tragically, two men lost their lives in the crash: Latif, also known as Latz, who served as Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina, his strength and conditioning coach. Both were seated in the front of the vehicle at the time, while Joshua, sitting in the back, survived with injuries.

In response to the news, Jake Paul took to 𝕏 to offer his support, emphasizing that life takes precedence over sport.

“Life is much more important than boxing,” Paul wrote. “I am praying for the lost lives, AJ, and everyone affected by today’s unfortunate accident.”

The message comes just days after their highly publicized clash on December 19 in Miami, where Joshua claimed a decisive victory over Paul, reportedly breaking the American’s jaw in two places and securing a sixth-round knockout.

Bode George Warns INEC Chair: Nigerians Won’t Accept Election Glitches in 2027

A former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has cautioned the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, to ensure that future elections are free from technical failures and credibility issues.

George issued the warning on Monday during an appearance on Politics Today, a political programme aired on Channels Television. His comments come amid growing public anticipation ahead of the 2027 general elections, with many Nigerians demanding a more transparent and trustworthy electoral process.

The PDP chieftain stressed that the shortcomings witnessed during the 2023 general elections must not be repeated.

According to him, Nigerians have grown weary of explanations centred on technological breakdowns, especially after huge public funds have been committed to election infrastructure.

Recalling past experiences, George noted that despite investments made by the previous administration to strengthen the electoral system, the process was still plagued by what INEC described as technical malfunctions. He warned that such explanations would no longer be acceptable to the electorate.

He urged Professor Amupitan to take decisive steps to safeguard the integrity of the electoral system, insisting that any form of failure—whether deliberate or accidental—would further erode public trust in the commission.

“There must be no room for excuses this time,” George said, emphasising that INEC must put robust mechanisms in place to prevent system breakdowns during elections.

Meanwhile, the electoral body has also come under pressure from civil society groups. About a month ago, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) called on Professor Amupitan to provide a detailed account of ₦55.9 billion allegedly missing or mismanaged in relation to election materials procured for the 2019 general elections.

SERAP said the allegations were contained in the latest report issued by the Office of the Auditor-General, published on 9 September 2025. The funds were reportedly allocated for the procurement of smart card readers, ballot papers, result sheets, and other essential election materials.

In a letter dated 6 December 2025 and signed by SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation demanded full disclosure of the contractors involved, including their ownership details and addresses. SERAP also urged INEC to refer the matter to relevant anti-corruption agencies and ensure that any misappropriated funds are recovered.

The group stressed that corruption within the electoral process poses a serious threat to Nigerians’ constitutional right to participate in free, fair, and credible elections, warning that INEC’s credibility depends on accountability and transparency.

As preparations for the 2027 polls gradually begin, both political leaders and civil society groups are making it clear that the margin for error has narrowed—and public patience has run out.

I Once Washed British Airways Toilet – Peter Obi Shares

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has shared a personal experience from his time in office to illustrate what he described as his hands-on leadership style and approach to problem-solving.

Speaking on Monday during an interactive Space session on 𝕏 with his supporters, known as the Obidients, Obi recalled an incident that took place several years ago on a British Airways flight while he was still a serving governor.

According to him, a female passenger had attempted to use the aircraft’s restroom but walked away after finding it in an unpleasant condition. Rather than ignore the situation or wait for the cabin crew, Obi said he chose to clean the toilet himself.

He explained that the move later caught the attention of a flight attendant, who was surprised to find the restroom spotless when she returned. Although she did not confront him directly, Obi said the staff member later shared the incident with others, including a government minister.

Recalling her reaction, Obi said she expressed disbelief that a sitting governor would take such an action.

Explaining his motivation, Obi said his decision was based on simple reasoning. He noted that since he might need to use the restroom later, it made sense to ensure it was clean.

The former governor used the story to stress the importance of personal responsibility, urging Nigerians to take initiative when they encounter problems instead of turning a blind eye. He also criticized what he described as a culture of pretence, adding that he does not keep domestic staff in his home.

As of the time this report was filed, British Airways had not issued any response regarding Obi’s account of the incident.

INEC Releases Ekiti Governorship Candidates List, PDP Missing

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the list of candidates cleared to contest the June 20, 2026, governorship election in Ekiti State, with nominees from 12 political parties making the final cut.

The list was displayed on Monday at INEC’s state headquarters in Ado-Ekiti and features the names of governorship candidates along with their running mates who have satisfied the commission’s requirements.

Among those cleared are Opeyemi Falegan of the Accord Party; Akande Oluwasegun of the African Action Congress (AAC); Ayodeji Ojo representing the Action Democratic Party (ADP); and Oluwadare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Also listed are incumbent governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Bidemi Awogbemi of the Action People’s Party (APP).

Other candidates include Joseph Anifowose of the Allied People’s Movement (APM); Oyebanji Olajuyin of the Labour Party (LP); Blessing Abegunde of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP); Olaniyi Ayodele of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP); Owoola Daramola of the Young Progressive Party (YPP); and Victor Adetunji of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

Noticeably missing from the list was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wole Oluyede. Oluyede, a medical practitioner, emerged as the PDP flagbearer during the party’s primary election held in November, where he secured 279 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Funso Ayeni, who garnered 239 votes. The primary was organised by a faction of the PDP National Working Committee with the support of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

The exclusion is linked to the lingering leadership crisis within the PDP, which has split the party into rival factions. One faction is aligned with Governors Makinde and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, while the other is loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

INEC had earlier declined a request to recognise the PDP National Working Committee led by Kabiru Turaki, citing unresolved legal battles over the party’s national leadership. The commission explained that existing court rulings prevent it from updating its records until all disputes arising from the PDP’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November are fully resolved.

As the election approaches, the fate of the PDP’s participation in the Ekiti governorship race remains uncertain, pending the outcome of the ongoing legal tussles.
