Sokoto Government Confirms Nigeria–US Joint Airstrikes on Terrorist Camps

The Sokoto State Government has acknowledged a coordinated military operation involving the United States and Nigerian forces that targeted terrorist strongholds within the state.

The air operation, which took place on Christmas Day, was conducted in Tangaza Local Government Area and was aimed at disrupting the activities of ISIS-linked fighters operating across northwestern Nigeria.

State Confirms Nigeria–US Collaboration

In an official statement released by the Director-General of Media and Publicity at Government House, Sokoto, Abubakar Bawa, the administration of Governor Ahmad Aliyu confirmed that the strikes were jointly executed by the Nigerian Armed Forces and US military personnel.

According to the statement, the mission forms part of broader efforts to dismantle terror and bandit networks threatening peace in Sokoto State and surrounding border communities.

Terrorist Hideouts Targeted in Tangaza

Government officials said the airstrikes focused on identified terrorist camps in Tangaza, an area that has faced security challenges in recent times. However, they noted that a comprehensive assessment of the operation’s impact is still underway.

“The effects of the airstrike cannot yet be fully ascertained, as detailed evaluation reports from the Joint Operations are still being compiled,” the statement said.

No Harm to Civilians, Government Assures

The Sokoto State Government reassured residents that there were no civilian casualties recorded during the operation, either in Tangaza or nearby Jabo communities. Citizens were urged to remain calm as security agencies continue monitoring the situation.

Investigation Ongoing Over Objects Found Near Jabo

Addressing separate concerns raised by residents, the government also confirmed that suspicious objects discovered near Jabo town in Tambuwal Local Government Area are currently under investigation.

Experts from both Nigerian and US military teams are reportedly analyzing the objects, with officials saying conclusions will be made public once the examination is complete.

“The nature and origin of the objects found near Jabo cannot be immediately determined, as findings from Nigeria–US military analysts are still awaited,” the statement added.

Military Promises Further Updates

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters had earlier confirmed the Christmas Day air operation, describing it as the result of intelligence-sharing and cooperation between Nigerian and US security agencies targeting ISIS-affiliated elements.

Authorities say additional information will be released once final assessment reports are concluded.

Sowore Condemns U.S. Airstrike in Nigeria as AFRICOM Confirms Christmas Day Operation

Former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has criticized the United States following a reported airstrike against suspected ISIS fighters in northwest Nigeria, warning that the action undermines Nigeria’s sovereignty and could destabilize the region.

Sowore described the strike as unacceptable foreign interference, arguing that while international partners can support Nigeria through training or intelligence sharing, direct military action on Nigerian soil crosses a dangerous line.

“Nobody should be celebrating this,” he said. “This is an imperialist move. Foreign troops launching attacks inside Nigeria is reckless and harmful.”

He added that the incident represents note-worthy setback for African self-determination, calling it “a sad moment for the idea of African liberation and independence.”

Trump Confirms Strike on ISIS Targets

The airstrike was publicly acknowledged by U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced on his Truth Social platform that American forces had carried out a military operation against ISIS fighters in northwest Nigeria.

According to Trump, the targeted group had been responsible for repeated attacks on Christians. He claimed the strike followed earlier warnings issued by his administration.

“At my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS terrorist elements in Northwest Nigeria,” Trump stated.

AFRICOM Says Operation Was Coordinated With Nigeria

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) later confirmed the airstrike, stating that it was conducted “at the request of Nigerian authorities” and resulted in the deaths of several ISIS operatives.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also acknowledged Nigeria’s cooperation in the operation, suggesting that further military actions could follow, though no specifics were provided.

The strike was reported to have taken place in Sokoto State, though some accounts referred to the location as “Soboto.”

Explosion Triggers Panic in Sokoto Community

Meanwhile, residents of Jabo village in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State were gripped by fear on Christmas night after a loud explosion was heard in the area.

Eyewitnesses said the blast caused widespread panic, with villagers rushing out of their homes in confusion. Although no casualties were reported, residents believe the explosion may be linked to the airstrike.
