PDP Condemns Deadly Mosque Explosion in Maiduguri, Decries Rising Insecurity

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the deadly explosion that rocked a mosque at Gamboru Market in Maiduguri, Borno State, describing it as a grim sign of worsening insecurity across the country.

According to reports, the blast occurred on Wednesday while worshippers were observing prayers inside the mosque. The explosion triggered panic in the bustling market area, as several people were killed and others sustained injuries.

Eyewitness accounts shared by security analyst Zagazola Makama revealed that the explosive device detonated within the mosque, killing some worshippers on the spot and injuring many others.

Following the blast, traders and residents fled the area in fear, while some individuals rushed to help the wounded before emergency personnel arrived. Thick smoke was seen rising from the affected section of the mosque, adding to the chaos.

Reacting to the incident, the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, issued a statement titled “Christmas Eve Explosion: One Too Many.” The opposition party strongly criticized the Federal Government, accusing it of failing in its primary responsibility to safeguard lives and property.

The PDP described the attack as unacceptable, stressing that ensuring citizens’ safety is the most basic duty of any government. The party urged the current administration to move beyond what it called “political rhetoric” and take decisive, practical steps to address the nation’s security challenges.

The party also expressed sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives, noting that no individual should be killed while engaging in religious worship. It warned that continued attacks on places of worship could undermine Nigerians’ constitutional right to freedom of religion and deepen fear within the society.

Calling for urgent action, the PDP appealed to both federal and state authorities to strengthen security measures, especially during the festive season. It emphasized that Nigerians deserve tangible security interventions, not promises, adding that the rising wave of violence has reached an intolerable level and must be addressed with seriousness and urgency.

Why I Have Never Prayed Since I Was Born – Seun Kuti

Afrobeat star and social activist Seun Kuti has sparked controversy after openly sharing his unorthodox perspective on prayer and religious practices.

In a recent statement, the musician revealed that he has never engaged in prayer and expressed skepticism about its effectiveness. Kuti also criticised what he called performative displays of faith, such as public kneeling, shouting, and rolling on the ground during worship. He described these acts as unnecessary and immature.

According to Kuti, authentic spirituality is measured not by outward rituals but by the way a person lives their life. He argued that daily actions, values, and personal conduct hold far more significance than verbal prayers or dramatic expressions of devotion.

“I have never prayed in my life, and I don’t believe it works,” Kuti said. “All this show you dey do, kneeling down, rolling on the ground, shouting—they’re all childishness. Your life is the prayer. What you do with your life is the prayer.”

Don Jazzy Reacts As Man Calls Him Out Over Infertility

Nigerian music heavyweight and Mavin Records founder, Collins Ajareh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, recently found himself at the center of a heated social media exchange after an 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) user made claims about the collapse of his marriage.

The online user alleged that Don Jazzy’s former wife ended their union due to fertility-related issues, further speculating about the fate of the music executive’s vast wealth in the event of his death. The post stirred reactions online, drawing Don Jazzy into the conversation.

Rather than offering a detailed rebuttal, the award-winning producer responded with sarcasm. In a brief but pointed reply, Don Jazzy joked that he had been searching for the commenter during his marriage to help him with sperm, a response that quickly gained traction across social media platforms.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, veteran Nigerian artist and producer Abdulrasheed Bello, widely known as JJC Skillz, has accused Don Jazzy and fellow music star D’banj of betrayal dating back to their early careers.

At the time, they were reportedly involved in running a television station. He explained that he had reached out to them, hoping they could help reconnect him with Nigeria’s music industry, believing they had the necessary influence and connections.

Three Soldiers Arrested After Clash With Police in Kwara State

Three personnel of the Nigerian Army have been taken into custody following an alleged assault on police officers along the Shao–Malete Expressway in Kwara State.

According to a situation report from the Shao Police Unit, the incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. on December 23, 2025, when a police patrol team stopped two motorcycles for a routine check along the highway.

The report stated that the three individuals on the motorcycles, later identified as soldiers, reportedly became aggressive after disembarking, confronting the officers and attempting to disarm them. During the altercation, one of the officers, PC Abdulganiyu Abdullateef, sustained injuries.

Police said the patrol team immediately requested reinforcement from their division. However, before additional officers arrived, the suspects escaped from the scene.

One of the motorcycle riders, identified as Saka Suleiman, a resident of Shao, was apprehended at the location. During interrogation, he reportedly identified one of the fleeing suspects as Saka Jamiu, a native of the community.

A coordinated search operation was subsequently launched, leading to the arrest of the remaining suspects in the early hours of December 24, 2025. At about 1:00 a.m., police operatives arrested Atunwa Adekunle, Ishola Awolola, and Saka Jamiu — all male natives of Shao and confirmed members of the Nigerian Army.

Davido Joins Accord Party Ahead of Osun 2026 Governorship Election

Award-winning Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has officially declared his political affiliation with the Accord Party, throwing his weight behind his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

The singer made the announcement public on Tuesday through his verified 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account, where he revealed plans to travel to Osogbo to formally register as a member of the party and collect his membership card.

“I’ll be live in Osun tomorrow to pick up my @AccordPartyNG membership card at Imole House, Osogbo,” Davido wrote, tagging both the party and Governor Adeleke in the post.

Davido’s political move comes just weeks after Governor Adeleke officially adopted the Accord Party as his new political platform following his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The governor announced his defection on December 9, 2025, during a well-attended event at the Government House in Osogbo, where leaders of the Accord Party at both national and state levels were present.

The switch marked a significant shift in Osun’s political landscape, with Governor Adeleke confirming his intention to seek a second term under the Accord Party’s banner in the 2026 governorship race.

Addressing the reasons behind his exit from the PDP, the governor pointed to unresolved leadership disputes at the party’s national level. He revealed that his decision to join the Accord Party was finalized on November 6, following extensive consultations with political stakeholders, party leaders, and opinion shapers across Osun State.

According to Adeleke, the move was aimed at protecting his re-election bid while promoting political stability within the state.

Davido had earlier fueled speculation about his political involvement after reacting subtly to news of his uncle’s resignation from the PDP, reposting the announcement online with a brief and cryptic caption, “Jeje…”.

FG Insists New Tax Laws Will Take Effect January 2026

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its resolve to roll out the newly approved tax reforms as scheduled, despite growing criticism and calls for a delay from some political leaders and stakeholders.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, defended the decision, insisting that the Tax Act should take effect on January 1, 2026, as planned.

According to him, postponing the reforms would only worsen the financial burden on ordinary Nigerians and small business owners.

Onanuga argued that the existing tax framework unfairly targets low-income earners and micro-enterprises, and maintaining the current system would perpetuate excessive taxation on vulnerable groups.

In a post shared on his official 𝕏 account on Wednesday, the presidential aide urged critics of the reforms to pay attention to explanations offered by Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee.

“Those asking for the suspension of the Tax Act, which is set to take effect in a week, should listen carefully to Taiwo Oyedele,” Onanuga wrote. “Do they really want the status quo to continue, where poor Nigerians and small businesses are heavily overtaxed?”

The proposed implementation has sparked controversy amid claims that the version of the tax law signed by the executive differs from the one approved by the National Assembly. These allegations have fueled demands for a pause in implementation until all disputed issues are resolved.

Notable figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, have publicly called for the suspension of the reforms, citing transparency and legislative concerns.

However, Oyedele has warned that delaying the reforms would have serious consequences for the majority of Nigerians. Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday, he stated that nearly 98 percent of workers would continue to bear excessive tax burdens if the new law is not enforced.

He explained that without the reforms, workers would face multiple layers of taxation, businesses would lose access to tax reliefs, and small, unprofitable enterprises would continue paying avoidable taxes. Oyedele also noted that value-added tax on food items would remain in place, further driving up the cost of basic necessities.

The federal government maintains that the tax reforms are designed to ease pressure on low-income earners, stimulate business growth, and create a fairer taxation system across the country.
