African Football Legends Who Never Won AFCON

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is more than a tournament—it is a stage where careers are defined, legends are forged, and national pride burns brightest.

Organized by the Confederation of African Football, it remains one of the world’s most-watched football competitions, producing unforgettable moments and heroes celebrated across the continent.

Egypt stands unrivaled as AFCON’s most successful nation, boasting seven titles, followed by Cameroon with five, Ghana with four, and Nigeria with three. Yet, despite the fame and brilliance of some of Africa’s greatest footballers, the ultimate prize has eluded many of them.

As the 35th edition of AFCON looms in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, attention turns to those stars whose legacies on the international stage remain incomplete.

Mohamed Salah: The Pharaoh’s Elusive Crown

At 33, Mohamed Salah is undoubtedly one of Africa’s finest footballers, a global superstar with Liverpool and the captain of Egypt. Yet, AFCON glory remains just out of reach.

Salah’s international debut in the tournament came relatively late due to Egypt missing three consecutive editions from 2012 to 2015. In 2017, he reached the final, only to lose to Cameroon. Four years later, fate repeated itself when Egypt fell to Senegal in a penalty shootout—Salah’s chance to take the decisive kick never came as the shootout ended before he could step forward. AFCON 2023 brought further heartbreak with an injury sidelining him as Egypt exited in the round of 16.

With time running out, AFCON 2025 may represent Salah’s last shot at adding the continental crown to his illustrious career.

Didier Drogba: Hero on Club Stage, Heartbreak in Africa

Few players could inspire like Didier Drogba. The Ivorian legend thrived in pressure-cooker matches for Chelsea but struggled to replicate that magic at AFCON finals.

Drogba captained Ivory Coast to two finals, in 2006 and 2012, but cruelly missed penalties on both occasions. Against Egypt in 2006, a spot-kick miss helped deny the Elephants the title, and six years later, a missed late penalty contributed to another defeat, this time against Zambia.

Ivory Coast finally lifted the trophy in 2015, a triumph that came after Drogba had retired from international football—proof of the bitter timing that has often defined his AFCON story.

George Weah: A Ballon d’Or Winner Without Continental Glory

George Weah’s name is etched in football history as Africa’s only Ballon d’Or winner, celebrated for dazzling performances at PSG and AC Milan. But international success remained elusive for Liberia’s iconic striker.

Liberia qualified for AFCON only twice during Weah’s career (1996 and 2002), failing to progress past the group stage both times. Weah scored just once in the tournament, a solitary goal in a 2002 draw with Mali. While the trophy slipped through his fingers, Weah later made history off the pitch as Liberia’s president from 2018 to 2024.

Nwankwo Kanu: Olympic Gold, AFCON Silver

Nwankwo Kanu’s career sparkled with club and Olympic success, including a UEFA Champions League title with Ajax and an Olympic gold medal with Nigeria in 1996. Yet AFCON proved a different challenge.

His closest chance came in 2000 when Nigeria reached the final on home soil. Facing Cameroon in a penalty shootout, Kanu missed his kick, leaving Nigeria to settle for silver. Despite multiple semi-final appearances, the Super Eagles never returned to a final during his tenure, leaving Kanu without the ultimate continental accolade.

Michael Essien: Ghana’s Midfield General, Hampered by Injuries

Michael Essien was the heartbeat of a talented Ghanaian generation, mirroring his club dominance at Chelsea with leadership for the Black Stars. But injuries repeatedly denied him AFCON glory.

He missed the 2006 tournament entirely, led Ghana to third place in 2008, and was forced off midway through the 2010 final against Egypt. Persistent fitness setbacks prevented Essien from ever lifting the trophy, highlighting how cruel timing can shape even the most gifted careers.

These stories underscore a simple truth: greatness in football is not measured solely by silverware. Legacy is defined by impact, inspiration, and moments that live forever in fans’ memories.

As AFCON 2025 approaches, the stage is set for a new generation to chase glory, while legends of the past remain reminders that even the brightest stars sometimes shine without lifting the crown.

Rivers Governor Fubara Thanks Tinubu, Wike — Omits Ibas in Statewide Address
News, Politics, Trending

‘I Was Not Really A Member Of PDP, Everything I Suffered Was Imposed On Me By The Party’ – Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has publicly attributed the difficulties he faced during the recent political crisis in the state to his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The crisis saw Fubara locked in a prolonged struggle with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), over control of the PDP’s structure and leadership in Rivers State.

In an effort to restore stability, President Bola Tinubu temporarily suspended both Governor Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.

After his reinstatement in September, Fubara formally left the PDP to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, following the defection of several key members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to the party.

Speaking with journalists at the APC headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, Fubara described himself as “a progressive at heart” and emphasized his commitment to fostering unity within the APC to accelerate development in both Rivers State and Nigeria at large.

Reflecting on his time with the PDP, Fubara expressed that his affiliation with the party had always been nominal. He said much of the political pressure and challenges he faced were imposed by the party itself.

“When you say I am a new member of the progressive family, that is correct. But I have always been a progressive at heart,” Fubara said. “Now we have a clear direction. Previously, perhaps, we lacked leadership or a governor as the head of the party. My goal now is to unite everyone for the progress and cohesion of the APC in the state.”

On the ease of his transition to the APC, Fubara added, “Joining the All Progressives Congress was simple for me. It was about gratitude—thanking Mr. President and partnering with other progressives to develop Rivers State and Nigeria. It wasn’t a difficult decision; it was straightforward. If you understand my story, it becomes clear.”

He further clarified, “Was I really a member of the PDP? Not in a meaningful way. About 90 percent of what I endured during the crisis came from the party itself. My involvement was largely nominal—I was more of an observer than a participant, standing on the balcony rather than being inside the house.”

Fubara’s defection marks a significant shift in Rivers State politics, signaling a potential consolidation of APC influence in the oil-rich state ahead of upcoming elections.

AFCON 2025: Ighalo Names Osimhen as Future Super Eagles Leader

Former Super Eagles striker Jude Odion Ighalo has thrown his weight behind Victor Osimhen as the ideal candidate to captain Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, following the retirement of William Troost-Ekong from international football.

Troost-Ekong’s unexpected decision to step down—despite being named in Nigeria’s provisional squad—has left a leadership void in the Super Eagles, sparking discussions about who should inherit the captain’s armband. While seasoned players such as Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, and Chidozie Awaziem are seen as potential leaders, Ighalo believes Osimhen possesses the unique qualities needed for the role.

Speaking to veteran football journalist Colin Udoh, Ighalo emphasized that his endorsement is not about age or tenure. “Victor is not the oldest in the team—Simon, Ndidi, Iwobi, even Awaziem, are older—but leadership is more than years of service,” Ighalo said.

According to the former Manchester United striker, Osimhen’s strength lies in his outspoken nature and willingness to hold people accountable, both on and off the pitch. Ighalo contrasted Osimhen’s assertiveness with Ndidi’s calm and reserved demeanor, noting that the captain must be someone who can motivate teammates and confront challenges head-on.

“Osimhen has the confidence to speak up for the team. He will push the boys, talk when needed, and make sure everyone is okay. That’s what leadership is about,” Ighalo added.

The former striker also highlighted the often-overlooked pressures of captaining the Super Eagles, describing the role as a bridge between players and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). “Being captain is not easy. Whatever the players demand, it comes to you to relay to the NFF. If there’s a backlash, it’s your responsibility,” he explained.

Ighalo further stressed that Osimhen’s status as one of Nigeria’s star players strengthens his influence within the squad. “When you’re performing at the highest level, people listen. Osimhen has that authority. He can demand standards and motivate his teammates not just with words but through his performance,” he said.

Beyond leadership off the pitch, Ighalo praised Osimhen’s energy and intensity on it. “He leads by example. He hustles, runs, and fights on the pitch, and that inspires others to work harder,” he noted.

Nigeria, drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania, will be aiming for their fourth AFCON title while also seeking redemption after missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With Osimhen potentially at the helm, Ighalo believes the Super Eagles are in capable hands.

DeeOne Opens Up About Past Relationship With Fashion Designer Veekee James

Nigerian comedian and former Big Brother Naija housemate, Aderombi Adedayo, widely known as DeeOne, has opened up about his past relationship with popular fashion designer Veekee James, following comments she recently made about him.

The discussion began after Veekee James, during an appearance on VJ Adams’ podcast, suggested that DeeOne was not someone to be taken seriously. According to her, paying close attention to him was a waste of time, as she claimed she had rarely heard him make meaningful statements. Her remarks quickly gained traction online, sparking reactions from fans and industry observers.

In response, DeeOne took to Instagram to address the situation and offer clarity. The comedian revealed that he and Veekee James were once romantically involved shortly after he left the Big Brother Naija house in 2018. He described their relationship as genuine at the time, stressing that it ended without hostility.

DeeOne explained that one of the major issues between them was his discomfort with feeling controlled in a relationship. He noted that some expectations placed on him made him feel more like an assistant than a partner, which ultimately contributed to their differences. Despite this, he maintained that he treated her well and that there is no lingering resentment between them.

The comedian also emphasized that Veekee’s husband is aware of their past, dismissing any speculation of hidden drama. He went on to wish the fashion designer and her spouse well, stating clearly that he harbors no ill feelings and has long moved on.

Urging fans not to take celebrity disputes too seriously, DeeOne reminded the public that there are many behind-the-scenes details about the entertainment industry that outsiders may never fully understand. He added that negative comments should not always be taken at face value and reiterated that, from his side, there is only goodwill.

Christmas Is Sacred, Not Dirty — CAN Calls Out Ini Edo Over ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’ Movie Title, Demands Apology

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has voiced strong objections to the title of a newly released Nollywood film, A Very Dirty Christmas, describing it as disrespectful to the core values of Christianity.

According to the association, Christmas is a deeply sacred season for Christians, marking the birth of Jesus Christ and symbolising peace, love, and spiritual purity. CAN argued that attaching the word “dirty” to such a holy celebration diminishes its religious meaning and reduces a solemn observance to something inappropriate.

While recognising the importance of artistic expression within the creative industry, CAN stressed that freedom of creativity should come with a sense of responsibility, particularly in a country as religiously and culturally diverse as Nigeria. The association warned that careless use of religious symbols or language could offend believers and deepen existing societal tensions.

CAN also raised concerns about how the film’s title was cleared for public release. It questioned the role of regulatory agencies, calling on the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to clarify the process that led to the approval of the title, especially during the Christmas season when religious sensitivity is heightened.

Furthermore, the association appealed to key industry stakeholders, including the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), to take a firm stand on promoting respect for religious beliefs in film productions. CAN emphasised the need for clear guidelines to ensure that sacred themes are handled with dignity.

In its statement, CAN urged the film’s producer, Ini Edo, to reconsider the title of the movie, tender an apology to offended Christians, and ensure greater sensitivity in future projects.

The association warned that at a time when Nigeria is grappling with moral and social challenges, actions perceived as trivialising sacred traditions could fuel division and weaken mutual respect among communities.

‘People Laugh At Me But Isreal DMW Is Someone I Can Cry To’ – Davido

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about the strong bond he shares with his longtime logistics manager, Isreal DMW, describing him as one of the closest people in his life.

The Grammy Award–winning singer made the revelation while appearing on a livestream hosted by popular skitmaker Carter Efe. During the session, Davido reflected on friendships and drew a comparison between Carter Efe’s relationship with his close associate, Kolu, and his own connection with Isreal DMW.

According to Davido, although their relationship is often misunderstood and ridiculed by the public, Isreal holds a very special place in his life. He revealed that beyond work, Isreal is a trusted confidant and emotional support system.

“People laugh at me and Isreal a lot, but he’s one of my best friends. He’s someone I can cry to. That’s just life,” Davido said.

Meanwhile, the singer also addressed his relationship with fellow Afrobeats star Omah Lay, revealing that their recent collaboration was born out of a desire to clear misconceptions about how he felt toward the younger artist.

It would be recalled that in 2024, Omah Lay admitted he once believed Davido disliked him, an assumption that changed after Davido publicly played his music during a viral livestream with American streamer Kai Cenat in Lagos.

Speaking on the incident, Davido explained that he reached out to Omah Lay after noticing a tweet in which the singer expressed surprise at the public shoutout.

Davido recounted that while driving Kai Cenat to a nightclub in Lagos, one of Omah Lay’s songs came on, prompting the streamer to ask about the artist. Davido said he immediately praised Omah Lay, describing him as “hot.”

The following day, Omah Lay tweeted that he had always thought Davido hated him, which prompted the DMW boss to send him a direct message questioning where the idea came from.

“We had never even met before,” Davido explained. “So we exchanged numbers, started talking and sending music to each other.”

He added that their conversations eventually led to multiple recordings, with both artistes working on several songs before settling on With You as the track to release.

The collaboration, Davido said, was a natural outcome of mutual respect and creative chemistry, finally putting to rest any lingering doubts about their relationship.

Clad in a white kaftan and wearing a red cap, the South-South governor explained to party leaders that although he was scheduled to attend the Progressive Governors’ Forum meeting, he considered it important to first pay a courtesy visit to the party’s national headquarters.

EFCC Seals Malami’s Residence Housing Buhari’s Daughter

Operatives of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday evening sealed off a property reportedly associated with former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, in what appears to be a deepening of an ongoing probe into his time in office.

Sources say the operation involved armed officers and multiple enforcement vehicles, underscoring the seriousness of the action. The residence is said to be occupied by Nana Hadiza Buhari, Malami’s wife and a daughter of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who was reportedly present at the time of the operation.

Malami, who served as Nigeria’s chief law officer from 2015 to 2023, is currently being held by the EFCC. He married Nana Hadiza Buhari in July 2022 during a private ceremony at the Presidential Villa Mosque in Aso Rock, near the end of the Buhari administration. She is the former president’s third daughter.

Investigators are reportedly examining a broad range of issues linked to Malami’s eight-year tenure, including alleged financial improprieties, money laundering, and questionable transactions involving multiple bank accounts. The probe is also said to touch on disputes surrounding the handling of recovered Abacha-era funds, as well as claims relating to possible terrorism financing.

Although Malami was earlier released on administrative bail, EFCC officials say that arrangement was withdrawn after he allegedly failed to comply with certain bail conditions. The commission insists that his continued detention is lawful and necessary to allow for further questioning as the investigation progresses.
