Soldier Killed as Suspected Kidnappers Abduct 13 on Okene–Auchi Federal Highway

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers, reportedly wearing military-style uniforms, have carried out coordinated attacks on two commercial vehicles along the Okene–Auchi Federal Highway, killing a serving Nigerian Army soldier and abducting 13 passengers.

Security sources disclosed that the incident occurred around 5:35 p.m. on December 16 when the attackers intercepted a green Toyota Sienna traveling from Abuja to Delta State with nine passengers on board.

During the assault, six passengers were forcibly taken away, while three others managed to escape and were later rescued by security operatives.

In a related attack moments later, the assailants stopped a white Toyota Hiace bus conveying 11 passengers from Delta State to Abuja along the same route. Seven occupants of the bus were abducted, while four were rescued, according to the sources.

Among the passengers was a Non-Commissioned Officer of the Nigerian Army who reportedly identified himself to the attackers. He was shot multiple times in the legs and thighs during the incident and later succumbed to his injuries. His remains have been deposited at the Okengwe General Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted.

Both affected vehicles were recovered from the scene and subsequently taken to a nearby police station for safekeeping. Security operatives also recovered five spent 7.62mm cartridge shells, believed to have been fired from an AK-47 rifle, during a sweep of the area.

Statements have been obtained from the rescued passengers to assist ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, security forces have launched joint rescue operations, including intensive bush combing and heightened surveillance along the highway, in a bid to rescue the abducted victims and track down the perpetrators.

Authorities have reassured members of the public that additional security measures are being deployed to strengthen safety along the Okene–Auchi corridor and prevent further attacks on motorists.

Trump Slams Travel Restrictions On Nigeria, 14 Other Countries [Full List]

On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, President Donald Trump signed a new Proclamation significantly broadening U.S. travel restrictions, targeting additional nations and tightening entry requirements as part of the administration’s ongoing effort to control immigration and enhance security.

The latest measures introduce partial travel restrictions for 15 new countries, many in Africa, while imposing full bans on several more nations. Among those facing partial limitations is Nigeria, joining 14 other countries under the updated policy.

Partial Restrictions Defined

Under the administration’s framework, “partial restrictions” generally prohibit the issuance of immigrant visas—which allow recipients to obtain permanent residency (Green Cards)—and certain nonimmigrant visas, including those for tourism, study, and exchange programs (B-1, B-2, F, M, and J visas).

The countries newly subjected to partial restrictions are:

1. Angola

2. Antigua and Barbuda

3. Benin

4. Côte d’Ivoire

5. Dominica

6. Gabon

7. The Gambia

8. Malawi

9. Mauritania

10. Nigeria

11. Senegal

12. Tanzania

13. Tonga

14. Zambia

15. Zimbabwe

Full Restrictions Maintained and Expanded

The Proclamation continues to enforce full bans on the 12 previously designated high-risk nations: Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

In addition, full travel restrictions are now extended to five more countries—Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and Syria—following recent security assessments. Nationals holding Palestinian Authority travel documents are also barred. Meanwhile, Laos and Sierra Leone, previously under partial restrictions, are now fully restricted.

Certain countries remain under partial limitations, including Burundi, Cuba, Togo, and Venezuela. Conversely, Turkmenistan sees a partial easing: nonimmigrant visa restrictions have been lifted due to improved cooperation with the U.S., though immigrant visa limitations remain in place.

Exceptions and Special Cases

The Proclamation allows exemptions for lawful permanent residents, current visa holders, diplomats, athletes, and other individuals whose entry is deemed in the U.S. national interest.

2026 Tax Laws Will Ease Burden On Businesses, Poor Nigerians – Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Nigerians not to fear the new tax regime set to take effect in 2026, emphasizing that it is designed to ease the burden on low-income earners, small businesses, and the poor.

The President’s message was delivered on Tuesday at the 8th Annual Senator Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable, which coincided with the 76th posthumous birthday lecture of the late Oyo State Governor.

The event, held at the University of Ibadan, was organized by the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation in partnership with the Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies.

This year’s theme was “Pathways to Electoral Credibility: Reforming Political Parties, Re-engineering Citizens, and Restoring Trust in Nigerian Democracy.”

The lecture attracted a wide audience, including friends, family, associates, and partners of the late governor. It was chaired by former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba. Ajimobi, who led Oyo State from 2011 to 2019, passed away in June 2020.

Economic Reforms Yielding Positive Results

Speaking through the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zaccheus Adedeji, President Tinubu highlighted the positive outcomes of his administration’s recent economic reforms.

He acknowledged that while the measures were initially challenging, they are now beginning to bear fruit.

“Our economic reforms were necessary to revive the nation’s economy,” the President said. “Investors are increasingly confident, and we are already seeing progress through improved macroeconomic indicators.”

He pointed to notable developments:

* GDP growth is gaining momentum.

* Inflation is gradually declining.

* The fiscal deficit is improving.

* Previously loss-making companies are now profitable, with higher capacity utilisation and renewed investment.

Relief Through New Tax Laws

Tinubu assured that the benefits of these reforms would become more tangible in the coming year, particularly through the introduction of new tax laws. According to him, these laws will reduce multiple taxation and exempt essential sectors from excessive taxes.

“Critical areas such as food, medicine, education, agriculture, and shared transportation will no longer be burdened by heavy taxes. Small businesses will also be freed from multiple taxation,” he explained. “There is no cause for concern; these laws are meant to bring relief to Nigerians, especially the poor and low-income earners.”

Honouring Ajimobi’s Legacy

The President also paid tribute to the late governor, describing Ajimobi as a leader committed to long-term development and making tough, but necessary decisions for the greater good.

“We shared a vision of leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the people, even when it requires difficult choices. His legacy is one of dedication to progress and development,” Tinubu said, also commending Ajimobi’s wife, Ambassador-designate Florence Ajimobi, for preserving the family’s legacy.

Addressing members of the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State, Tinubu encouraged unity ahead of the 2027 elections. “The best way to honor our departed statesman is to unite the party and reclaim leadership in the state,” he urged.

Reflections on Democracy

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, described the roundtable as an important platform to celebrate Ajimobi’s contributions and tackle key challenges facing Nigerian democracy.

He emphasized that rebuilding public trust requires sincere, accountable, and inclusive governance, while credible elections depend on strong internal democracy within political parties.

Former Chief of Staff to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, delivering the lead paper, identified political party reform as crucial for strengthening democracy. He highlighted voter apathy, weak party structures, electoral violence, insecurity, and trust deficits as ongoing obstacles to credible elections.

Florence Ajimobi, President of the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation, praised President Tinubu for his loyalty to the late governor and continued support of the foundation’s initiatives, describing it as a testament to their shared commitment to good governance.

Other dignitaries present included the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, who served as Special Guest of Honour, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, traditional rulers, community leaders, and students.

Insecurity: NLC, Civil Society Groups Assemble in Abuja Despite Talks With Tinubu

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have started converging at the union’s national secretariat in Abuja as preparations get underway for a nationwide demonstration over worsening insecurity in the country.

Reports indicate that key labour leaders are already on ground, including NLC President, Joe Ajaero. Several civil society figures and activists are also present, among them Omoyele Sowore and members of the Revolution Now Movement, showing broad-based support for the protest.

Security presence around the venue has been noticeably reinforced, with personnel drawn from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Department of State Services (DSS) deployed to monitor activities.

The gathering comes barely hours after a high-level meeting between the NLC leadership and President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday night. The meeting was convened in an attempt to persuade the labour union to reconsider its planned nationwide protest against rising insecurity.

Ajaero led the NLC delegation to the State House, where they met with the President alongside several top government officials. Those present included the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma; Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo; Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris; and the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.

When questioned by journalists after the meeting on whether the protest would go ahead, Ajaero stopped short of giving a clear answer. He emphasized that decisions within the NLC are taken collectively and not unilaterally.

“I’m not insisting on anything,” he said. “I will communicate our position. This is not an organisation run by one person. We have engagements with the governors’ forum, and we will go back to reflect on what Mr President has told us before taking the next step.”

Despite the talks, labour supporters have continued to assemble, signaling that the union remains firm in pressing its demands as concerns over insecurity persist nationwide.

I’m Too Presidential To Be Anybody’s Vice – Amaechi

Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has firmly dismissed suggestions that he could serve as a running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speculation had been rife in political circles that Amaechi might join forces with Atiku, who is widely tipped to secure the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). However, Amaechi put the rumours to rest while speaking at a recent public engagement in Abuja.

Addressing the matter directly, the former governor made it clear that accepting the role of vice president is not an option for him, citing both personal conviction and the limitations of the office under Nigeria’s political structure.

“I will not be vice president to anyone,” Amaechi said bluntly. “There are several reasons for that, but the most important is that I am too presidential to occupy a subordinate position.”

A former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Amaechi argued that the vice presidency in Nigeria is fundamentally constrained. According to him, the office lacks real authority and is largely shaped by the disposition of the president in power.

He explained that the arrangement often breeds tension, as vice presidents are expected to remain dependent and politically restrained. “Under this system, conflict is inevitable,” he noted. “Rather than deal with that, I would prefer serving as a minister than being vice president.”

Amaechi, who is also reportedly interested in contesting for the ADC’s presidential ticket, maintained that his stance is rooted in experience and a clear understanding of how power functions within Nigeria’s executive arm.

NLC Issues Final Warning Ahead of Nationwide Insecurity Protest

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a strong caution to political stakeholders and security agencies as Nigerians prepare for a nationwide protest scheduled for today over the country’s deepening insecurity.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the labour union revealed that it had received what it described as credible intelligence suggesting plans to deploy armed thugs to disrupt the demonstrations.

According to the NLC, such actions are allegedly aimed at triggering violence that could justify a forceful clampdown on peaceful protesters.

The Congress described the December 17 protest as far more than a routine march, portraying it as a nationwide expression of sorrow and frustration over the relentless killings, kidnappings, and attacks that have claimed the lives of countless Nigerians.

“This action is a shared moment of mourning and resistance,” the statement noted. “It represents the anguish of ordinary Nigerians and a democratic demand for the most basic right — the right to live and feel safe in one’s country.”

The NLC lamented that many of its members, including teachers, farmers, miners, and other workers, have fallen victim to banditry and criminal violence, stressing that the human toll has become impossible to quantify.

While reaffirming its commitment to a peaceful protest, the labour body warned that any attempt to harm participants or suppress the demonstrations would have serious consequences.

“If any worker, citizen, or comrade is attacked or injured, whether by hired thugs or excessive state force, the Congress will immediately declare a total, indefinite nationwide strike,” the statement warned.

The union explained that such a strike would paralyse economic activities across the country, shutting down production, services, and critical sectors nationwide. It added that any assault on the protest would amount to an attack on the very foundation of Nigeria’s workforce, with unavoidable nationwide repercussions.

The NLC also called on the Nigeria Police Force to uphold its constitutional duty to safeguard citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and expression. It noted that law enforcement agencies had already been officially informed about the protest routes and arrangements.

“The police must rise to their responsibility of protecting citizens and ensuring that democratic rights are neither suppressed nor violated,” the Congress stated.

Meanwhile, the Acting General Secretary of the NLC, Benson Upah, urged participants to maintain calm and discipline throughout the protest. He encouraged demonstrators to resist provocation and remain united.

“Stand firm, stay peaceful, and remain disciplined,” Upah said. “Our strength lies in our solidarity.”

Lagos Police Detain Influencer Peller Over Dangerous Livestream Driving

The Lagos State Police Command has taken social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller, into custody following a dangerous driving incident that occurred while he was livestreaming on social media.

According to reports, the incident happened on Sunday, December 14, 2025, and resulted in a serious road accident. Police authorities described Peller’s conduct as highly reckless, noting that it not only endangered his own life but also posed a serious threat to other road users.

Confirming the arrest in a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the influencer was apprehended after a video surfaced showing him driving at an excessive speed during a live broadcast.

“The suspect was observed driving dangerously while streaming live on social media, which led to a motor accident and exposed innocent members of the public to grave danger,” Adebisi stated.

The police spokesperson added that the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation. She noted that once investigations are concluded, the findings will be made public and the suspect will be charged in a court of competent jurisdiction.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, issued a stern warning to social media users, particularly influencers and content creators.

He cautioned against using online platforms to promote or engage in reckless, unlawful, or dangerous behaviour, stressing that such actions will attract severe legal consequences.

“Lawlessness of any form will not be tolerated, and offenders will face the full weight of the law,” the Commissioner warned.

Tinted Glass Permit Policy Still Valid, Nigeria Police Insist

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed claims that the Motor Vehicle Tinted Glass Permit Policy has been struck down by the courts, stating that no final judicial ruling has declared the policy unlawful.

In a statement released on Tuesday, December 16, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the clarification was necessary amid widespread public debate and recent remarks by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

According to the police, the statement was issued to “provide institutional clarity, reassure the public, and reaffirm the Force’s commitment to the rule of law while maintaining public order.”

No Court Order Nullifying Policy

The Police stressed that there is currently no subsisting court judgment or injunction permanently restraining the Force from enforcing regulations relating to tinted vehicle glass.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains a constitutionally established institution with the mandate to protect lives and property, prevent crime, and preserve internal security,” the statement said, adding that the Force operates under civil authority and within the limits of the law.

Quoting the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the statement reaffirmed the Force’s respect for the judiciary and its willingness to comply with all lawful court orders.

“The Force will not engage in any conduct that undermines ongoing judicial proceedings,” the IGP was quoted as saying.

Pending Litigation Does Not Halt Police Duties

While acknowledging that litigation concerning the tinted glass policy is ongoing, the Police maintained that the existence of a court case does not automatically suspend its statutory responsibilities.

“The mere pendency of litigation does not extinguish the lawful duties of the Police, except where a court has expressly and finally ruled otherwise,” the statement explained.

The Force emphasised that, until such a ruling is made, the tinted glass permit policy remains a valid component of Nigeria’s security and road safety framework.

It added that submissions made by police legal representatives in court accurately reflected the institution’s official position and were presented in good faith.

Although the Police said it has exercised caution while the matter is before the courts, it warned that such restraint should not be interpreted as relinquishing its legal authority.

Internal Memo Misinterpreted

Addressing public concerns over an internal memo dated December 15, 2025, the Police clarified that the communication was strictly for administrative and planning purposes.

“The memo did not authorise immediate enforcement actions or direct any conduct contrary to existing court processes,” the Force stated.

According to the Police, decisions regarding enforcement timelines and methods remain subject to constitutional provisions, judicial oversight, and operational discretion.

Security Concerns Remain

The Police reiterated that regulating tinted vehicle glass remains a legitimate security issue, noting that heavily tinted vehicles have been linked to crimes including kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent offences.

“Both within Nigeria and globally, the misuse of tinted vehicles has been associated with serious criminal activity,” the statement noted, stressing the Force’s responsibility to address such risks lawfully and proportionately.

The NPF assured Nigerians that any enforcement action would be carried out with professionalism, moderation, and strict respect for human rights.

Zero Tolerance for Misconduct

The Inspector-General of Police also restated the Force’s zero-tolerance policy toward extortion, harassment, and abuse of authority by officers.

“Any personnel found engaging in misconduct will face disciplinary action in line with established procedures,” the statement warned.

However, the Police urged the public not to use isolated cases of misconduct to discredit the entire institution, highlighting the sacrifices of officers who risk their lives daily to safeguard citizens.

Engagement with NBA, Call for Calm

Describing the Nigerian Bar Association as a critical stakeholder in the justice system, the Police pledged continued constructive engagement grounded in mutual respect for institutional boundaries.

The Force said it would avoid public confrontations capable of eroding confidence in either law enforcement or the judiciary.

The statement concluded by urging Nigerians to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, assuring the public of the Police’s commitment to national security and stability.
