EFCC Detains Former AGF Abubakar Malami Over Terrorism Financing and Financial Crimes

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, into custody over allegations of terrorism financing and other financial crimes.

Reports indicate that Malami was unable to meet the conditions of his previously granted bail, prompting the anti-graft agency to detain him.

An EFCC source confirmed that as of 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Malami remained in custody due to his non-compliance with the bail requirements.

Detention Linked to Terror Financing and Recovered Abacha Loot

The source revealed that the detention is connected to investigations into terrorism financing and the management of funds recovered from the late Sani Abacha’s stash in Switzerland and Jersey, UK.

“We have detained him over terrorism financing and the whereabouts of Abacha loot recovered from Switzerland and the Island of Jersey in the UK,” the EFCC official said. “He will remain in custody until he fulfills the necessary requirements.”

Non-Compliance with Bail Conditions

The EFCC clarified that Malami’s continued detention also stems from his failure to meet bail conditions.

“He was initially granted bail but did not meet the stipulated conditions,” the source said. “He remains in our custody, and this is just one of several offences under investigation.”

Facing Multiple Allegations

Authorities disclosed that Malami is currently under investigation for 18 separate offences, including money laundering, abuse of office, and terrorism financing.

“At present, we are probing him for 18 offences. The exact sums involved are still being assessed as new transactions are uncovered during the investigation,” the EFCC source added.

Daily Interrogations Ordered

As part of the ongoing probe, the EFCC has ordered Malami to appear daily throughout December for questioning regarding the recovered Abacha funds and other related financial dealings.

Malami Denies Wrongdoing

Responding to the allegations, Malami described the claims as “fabricated” and defended his record.

“For the avoidance of doubt, my public record in office stands in direct contradiction to any insinuation of complicity in terrorism financing,” he stated. “During my tenure, I collaborated with government institutions to strengthen Nigeria’s legal framework against money laundering and terrorism financing, not weaken it.”

The EFCC investigation remains active as authorities work to clarify Malami’s involvement in the handling of recovered Abacha funds and other financial matters.

NFF Denies Eric Chelle Salary Arrears Ahead of AFCON 2025

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed claims that Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is owed two months’ salary as the team gears up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Chelle, who took charge in January with clearly defined objectives—guiding Nigeria to World Cup qualification and reaching the AFCON semi-finals—has overseen a notable rise in the team’s performance.

Under his leadership, the Super Eagles climbed from fourth to second in Group C of the CAF qualifiers, finishing just a single point behind South Africa. He then led Nigeria through the playoffs, securing victory over Gabon before a narrow penalty shootout loss to DR Congo.

Salary Oversight Lies With NSC, Not NFF

According to NFF sources cited by OwnGoal, the federation has no obligation to pay Chelle directly. Salary matters for the coach are the responsibility of the National Sports Commission (NSC), headed by Shehu Dikko.

The official also clarified that reports suggesting Chelle is owed three months are inaccurate; the coach is reportedly two months behind in payments.

“The NFF is not responsible for Eric Chelle’s salary. That falls under the NSC, so any delay in payments for October and November should be addressed by them,” the official explained.

Financial Issues Persist Amid Sporting Success

The revelation comes against a backdrop of ongoing financial concerns within Nigerian football. Earlier, Super Eagles players staged protests over unpaid allowances dating as far back as 2019, even as the team navigated crucial World Cup playoff fixtures.

Despite these off-field challenges, Chelle has retained the confidence of the NFF Technical Committee, thanks to his impressive results in both qualification stages. This endorsement secured him a renewed mandate to lead Nigeria into AFCON 2025.

The French coach, however, has yet to make a public statement confirming or disputing the outstanding salary reports.

Federal High Court Acquits 11 #EndBadGovernance Protesters of Treason and Terrorism Charges

In a major legal victory for civil rights in Nigeria, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday dismissed all treason and terrorism-related charges against 11 activists arrested during the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance protests.

The court’s decision, hailed by human rights advocates as a “landmark ruling,” comes after more than a year of legal proceedings against the protesters, who had been accused of attempting to destabilize the nation.

Reacting to the ruling, one of the freed activists, Adaramoye Michael Lenin, took to social media, describing the outcome as a historic triumph. “Historic victory today! Justice Emeka Nwite struck out the treason and terrorism charges against 11 EndBadGovernance protesters and acquitted all of us,” he wrote on Facebook.

The August 2024 protests, which swept through multiple cities in Nigeria, were fueled by widespread public frustration over rising insecurity, inflation, and perceived governance failures under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The acquitted individuals include Adaramoye Michael Lenin, Daniel Akande, Mosiu Sodeeq, Adeyemi Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Opaluwa Elego Simeon, Angel Love Innocent, Buhari Lawal, Basir Bello, Nurudeen Khamis, and Abdulsalam Zubairu. They had faced an array of serious charges, including treasonable felony, unlawful assembly, and alleged affiliations with terrorism.

During the protests, security agencies had classified some participants as threats to national security, detaining them under controversial circumstances that drew criticism from human rights groups and civil society organizations.

President Tinubu Urges APC Osun Governorship Aspirants to Unite Ahead of December 13 Primary

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday evening met with All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders and Osun State governorship aspirants at the State House, Abuja, urging them to prioritize party unity and consensus as the party prepares for its primary election on December 13.

According to a statement released by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the meeting brought together the leading APC aspirants in Osun State, including former Deputy Governor Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, Dotun Babayemi, Akin Ogunbiyi, Senator Babajide Omoworare, Kunle Adegoke (SAN), Babatunde Hareter Oralusi, Mulikat Abiola Jimoh, and Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.

Also present were top APC officials, including National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum Hope Uzodimma, and Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola.

During the meeting, President Tinubu commended the aspirants for their dedication to the party in Osun State. He emphasized the importance of closing ranks and supporting whichever candidate the party ultimately selects, highlighting that internal divisions had contributed to APC’s loss to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the previous election.

“Your foremost responsibility is to the party and its success. By rallying behind the consensus candidate, you strengthen APC’s chances of winning and ensure the continuity of good governance in Osun State. I have full confidence in your ability to deliver victory, and you have my support and that of the national leadership,” Tinubu said.

Following the discussions, the aspirants and party leaders issued a joint statement committing to uphold party unity and support the consensus candidate chosen for the December 13 primary. Key points from the statement include:

1. Affirmation of APC’s supremacy in determining the party’s governorship candidate for Osun State.

2. Agreement to respect the party’s decision to nominate a consensus candidate for the upcoming primary.

3. Commitment to support the candidate nominated by the party.

4. Pledge to maintain peace, unity, and cohesion within the APC, avoiding any actions that could undermine the party’s integrity.

5. Dedication to collectively and individually ensuring the party’s success in the polls and strengthening good governance in Osun State.

U.S. House Committee Vows Action Against Religious Persecution in Nigeria

The United States House Appropriations Committee has reiterated its commitment to combating religious persecution in Nigeria, declaring that “America will not look away as innocent lives are taken.”

The committee made the statement on Wednesday via its official 𝕏 account, following an investigative trip to Nigeria led by congressional appropriators under the direction of former President Donald Trump.

“Directed by @POTUS, appropriators conducted an on-the-ground mission to gather information on Christian persecution in Nigeria and shape policy recommendations,” the post read. “Religious freedom and atrocity response remain central to our NSRP bill.”

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, confirmed the visit, noting that the U.S. delegation was hosted in Abuja as part of ongoing bilateral security discussions. “The visit built on prior engagements in Washington, DC, and focused on counter-terrorism cooperation, regional stability, and strengthening the strategic security partnership between Nigeria and the United States,” Ribadu said.

Rep. Riley Moore, one of the visiting lawmakers, described the mission as “very productive,” revealing that the delegation engaged with Christian and community leaders in Benue State, including members of the Tiv and Catholic communities.

The diplomatic initiative comes amid heightened scrutiny of Nigeria’s human rights practices. The Trump administration recently redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) for alleged violations of religious freedom, prompting warnings from Congress about possible U.S. military involvement.

The Nigerian government has consistently rejected claims of religious bias, emphasizing that attacks by non-state actors target both Christian and Muslim populations.

On November 20, Ribadu met with U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon to discuss a coordinated approach to insecurity in Nigeria. That same day, the U.S. House Subcommittee on Africa held a public hearing to examine the CPC redesignation and its implications.

‘I Love PDP, But Things Are Falling Apart Everyday’ – Adeleke Gives Reason For Dumping Party

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party, citing escalating internal conflicts within the PDP and the need to secure a stable political platform for the state’s future.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday evening, Adeleke explained that his decision, though difficult, was driven by the ongoing leadership disputes and legal uncertainties within the PDP.

“I have a strong emotional attachment to the PDP, but the circumstances made it impossible to continue,” Adeleke stated. “I did everything I could, but I love my state, and I had to act to protect its progress. Without a reliable platform and limited time, the decision became necessary.”

Rejecting claims that his defection was motivated by personal gain, Adeleke insisted that his priority is governance and ensuring stability for Osun State. “This is not about abandoning PDP. I remain committed to its ideals, but I must safeguard the good work we’ve started and the future of the state,” he emphasized.

The governor described the recurring crises within the PDP as both disheartening and disruptive. “Every day seemed to bring a new challenge within the party. As a reasonable person, I had to decide on a path forward. That’s why I chose the Accord Party,” he added.

Adeleke officially declared his allegiance to the Accord Party during a ceremony at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Osogbo on Tuesday, attended by key national and state party leaders.

The defection follows the release of Adeleke’s resignation letter from the PDP dated November 4, 2025. Shortly afterward, the PDP held its primary and nominated Adedamola Adebayo as its governorship candidate for the 2026 election.

On Wednesday, the Accord Party screening committee cleared Adeleke to contest the party’s governorship primary in Osogbo, positioning him to emerge as the party’s flagbearer for the upcoming election.

Tinubu Orders Ministers To Get Presidential Clearance For Police Escorts

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday delivered a firm directive to all members of his cabinet: police officers currently deployed as personal security aides to VIPs, VVIPs and ministers must be withdrawn without delay.

Addressing the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the State House in Abuja, the President stressed that the decision was final, and he cautioned ministers against attempting to circumvent the new policy.

“If your duties genuinely require additional protection, consult the Inspector General of Police and obtain my approval,” Tinubu said.

To ensure strict enforcement, the President tasked the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, with coordinating the full rollout of the directive.

Tinubu emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force exists primarily to safeguard ordinary citizens—especially the vulnerable—not to serve as private security for a select group of privileged individuals. As part of the new security framework, he announced that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, would oversee the deployment of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel as replacements for police officers withdrawn from VIP duties.

“The Civil Defence Corps is properly trained and equipped for VIP protection,” the President noted.

He added that freeing police personnel from VIP assignments would strengthen national security operations, enabling the force to better confront pervasive threats such as kidnapping, banditry and terrorism. While acknowledging that certain positions may require exceptions, Tinubu insisted that such cases must follow due process and receive clearance.

Turning to another urgent issue, the President directed Vice President Kashim Shettima, in his capacity as Chair of the National Economic Council, to intensify engagement with state governors on the implementation of ranching reforms aimed at resolving longstanding herder–farmer conflicts.

He further ordered the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Muktar Maiha, to begin mobilising resources to rehabilitate grazing areas and support the rollout of modern ranching systems, particularly in communities affected by recurrent clashes.

“This reform is both an economic opportunity and a path to peace,” Tinubu said. “Land belongs to the states, and the constitutional provisions must guide everything we do.”

According to the President, revitalising ranching infrastructure will help stabilise rural communities, protect vulnerable populations, and significantly reduce the cycle of violence between herders and farmers.

ISWAP Executes Suspected Army Informants, Raids Police Officer’s Homes

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has reportedly killed two more individuals accused of leaking information to the Nigerian military, bringing the total number of recent executions by the terror group to nine.

According to security sources, the surge in killings appears to be part of a broader internal purge as ISWAP attempts to identify and eliminate suspected informants amid growing speculation of an imminent joint US–Nigeria military operation targeting the group.

Security analyst Brant Philip confirmed the latest executions, stating that one victim was seized from his home in Dekwa, Yobe State, while the other was apprehended near Gubio in Borno State. The militants also allegedly made away with the second victim’s vehicle.

“ISWAP executed another two spies loyal to the Nigerian Army yesterday,” Philip said. “These killings, which now total nine in just a few days, strongly suggest the group is trying to root out internal leaks ahead of an expected coordinated offensive.”

In a separate incident, ISWAP fighters carried out a targeted attack in Tetiba, Yobe State, where they reportedly stormed three houses belonging to a Nigerian police officer, Officer-in-Charge Mohammed Modu.

Acting on intelligence believed to have come from local collaborators, the militants set all three houses ablaze before escaping with motorcycles and vehicles owned by the officer. No injuries or fatalities were recorded during the assault.

Philip also shared details of the raid on 𝕏, noting:

“ISWAP raided three houses in Tetiba, Yobe State—all belonging to Police O/C Mohammed Modu. Based on local intel, the terrorists burned the houses and carted away motorcycles and vehicles. Thankfully, no casualties were reported.”

Chinese Companies, Politicians’ Children Still Guarded – Ningi Cries Out Over Loss Of His Police Orderly

Lawmakers have sharply criticised the manner in which President Bola Tinubu’s directive to withdraw police orderlies from Very Important Personalities (VIPs) is being carried out, arguing that the policy is being implemented unevenly.

President Tinubu had recently ordered the recall of roughly 11,000 police personnel attached to VIPs nationwide.

The move, according to the administration, is aimed at boosting the number of officers available for core policing duties amid rising insecurity and manpower shortages in local communities.

During Wednesday’s plenary, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) revealed that his *only* police orderly was withdrawn in the early hours of the day. He, however, noted that many other VIPs—including ministers, business executives, and even entertainers—still move around with heavy police escorts.

Ningi condemned what he described as selective enforcement of the directive, insisting that the policy must be applied fairly and without exceptions.

“It has to be across the board,” he said. “Let’s see it implemented from the Office of the President down to the Vice President, Senate President, Speaker, ministers and everyone else. After taking away my only orderly, I still see ministers in convoys with full security details. I see business organisations, Chinese firms, children of top politicians, and even musicians with police guards.”

He stressed that while he did not personally fear for his safety, it was unacceptable for senators to be targeted while others continued to enjoy full security protection. Ningi urged the Senate President to instruct the Committee on Police Affairs to investigate the partial enforcement of the order, warning that “the National Assembly should not be turned into a scapegoat.”

Responding, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North), who presided over the session, said the Senate leadership had already discussed the matter extensively and was in communication with the Presidency to secure an exemption for lawmakers.

Jibrin reassured aggrieved senators that efforts were underway to restore their police orderlies, adding that providing security to legislators is consistent with global legislative practice.

“We have taken this matter seriously,” he said. “At the leadership level, we agreed to initiate the necessary steps to ensure your police orderlies are reinstated. I believe we have a listening President who will review the directive—which, to be fair, was issued with good intentions.”

The Senate’s intervention comes amid intense public debate over how to balance the need to safeguard VIPs with the urgent demand for more police officers in communities across Nigeria.
