Nigeria Begins Diplomacy to Free Detained Air Force Aircraft in Burkina Faso

The Federal Government has begun top-level diplomatic engagements with Burkina Faso in a bid to secure the release of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft and its crew currently held in the country.

Sources say that senior representatives from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Defence Headquarters, and ECOWAS liaison offices have already stepped in to manage the delicate situation.

According to insiders, officials within Burkina Faso’s civil aviation sector as well as some military officers are reportedly uncomfortable with a political directive that overturned the initial clearance granted to the aircraft.

“The situation on ground is stable,” an official familiar with the matter said. “The Nigerian personnel are being treated well. At this point, the issue is more political than operational, and both countries are working behind the scenes to de-escalate.”

A defence intelligence officer noted that the NAF crew adhered to global aviation standards by declaring an in-flight emergency, requesting access to the nearest safe airspace, receiving formal permission to land, and undergoing necessary repairs.

Under International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) protocols, any aircraft facing an emergency must be allowed immediate entry into any available airspace to ensure the safety of the crew and aircraft.

“This is normal procedure,” a senior flight operations expert explained. “Once an emergency is declared, airspace sovereignty becomes secondary until the aircraft is safely on the ground.”

Nigeria is said to be handling the matter with measured diplomacy, even as officials privately express concerns over what they describe as an avoidable escalation influenced by political undercurrents within the Confederation of Sahel States (AES).

“There is no animosity between Nigeria and Burkina Faso,” a diplomatic source clarified. “However, internal AES politics has complicated what should have been a straightforward emergency landing and release.”

Negotiations are ongoing, with both sides optimistic that the matter will be resolved soon.

Nigeria Probes Forced Landing of Air Force C-130 in Burkina Faso

The Federal Government says it is investigating reports that a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) C-130 transport aircraft was compelled to land in Burkina Faso following an alleged breach of the country’s airspace.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed that officials were still piecing together the details of what transpired.

“We are following the situation closely. Once we have verified the necessary facts, an official statement will be issued,” Ebienfa assured.

Earlier reports indicated that the military authorities in Burkina Faso, acting through the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), accused Nigeria of flying a military aircraft into their airspace without prior clearance. The incident reportedly triggered emergency protocols.

According to information released by the Agence d’Information du Burkina, the aircraft—with two crew members and nine soldiers onboard—executed an emergency landing in the city of Bobo Dioulasso on December 8, 2025.

“The Confederation of Sahel States informs the public that a Nigerian Air Force C-130 was compelled to land in Bobo Dioulasso after declaring an in-flight emergency while inside Burkinabe airspace,” the AES statement said.

Burkina Faso’s authorities insisted the aircraft lacked the required overflight authorisation, describing the situation as a serious violation of their territorial integrity. The AES strongly condemned the incident, emphasising that the sovereignty of its member nations must be respected.

The confederation added that its air and anti-aircraft defence units had been placed on heightened alert and instructed to “neutralise any aircraft that violates the airspace of the Confederation.”

Nigeria’s Benin Intervention Shows Tinubu’s Security Resolve

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, says Nigeria’s rapid military support to the Benin Republic and the successful rescue of 100 abducted pupils in Niger State reflect the administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding democracy and strengthening national security.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Monday, Onanuga explained that Nigeria’s involvement in quelling the attempted coup in Benin followed formal appeals from President Patrice Talon. He added that the coordinated response of Nigeria’s armed forces in rescuing the schoolchildren further demonstrated the country’s growing capability to address internal security challenges.

According to him, “The events of the last two days show clearly that this government prioritizes the defence of democratic institutions, not only within Nigeria but across the West African region.”

Praising the military and other security agencies for the safe recovery of the Papiri schoolchildren, Onanuga commended the synergy between the air force and ground troops, saying their performance proves Nigeria’s readiness to confront threats against the nation.

He emphasized that the deployment of Nigerian forces to Benin was neither impulsive nor unilateral, noting that Lagos received two urgent diplomatic communications from Cotonou. “The Beninese government requested fighter jets to dislodge the coup plotters, and after that operation, they returned with another request for ground troops,” he said.

Onanuga added that the intervention fully aligned with ECOWAS protocols, especially as President Tinubu currently chairs the regional bloc. He described Tinubu as one of the strongest voices for constitutional order in West Africa since assuming office in 2023.

“Every directive he issued regarding support for Benin Republic was consistent with his commitment to protecting democracy. This is a principle he has upheld from the start,” Onanuga noted.

EFCC Re-Arrests Ex-AGF Malami Over Abacha Loot Probe

Nigeria’s former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has once again been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), only a few days after his initial grilling by investigators.

Multiple sources told newsmen that Malami was picked up late Monday night and has been battling to satisfy the EFCC’s strict bail requirements.

One of the key conditions is the presentation of two serving permanent secretaries as sureties—a requirement Malami was reportedly scrambling to meet as of Monday night.

“Malami was arrested again. He spent the night trying to secure two permanent secretaries to sign his bail,” a source close to the investigation disclosed.

This fresh detention follows Malami’s earlier appearance before the EFCC on Friday, November 28, during which he was questioned and granted bail. However, he nearly remained in custody overnight due to the same difficult bail terms.

Malami later posted on X that he had been released, describing the session as “successful” and insisting that the truth would expose what he called fabricated allegations.

The renewed arrest comes amid Malami’s firm rejection of the allegations against him—claims tied to the recovery of the $310 million Sani Abacha loot, which later rose to $322.5 million with interest.

The EFCC alleges that Malami duplicated a recovery process supposedly handled by Swiss lawyer Enrico Monfrini before Malami took office in 2015.

But Malami has pushed back sharply. In a statement signed by his media aide, Mohammed Doka, he described the accusations as “baseless, illogical, and lacking any real substance.”

He further argued that if Monfrini had indeed concluded the recovery long before 2015, the Swiss lawyer would not have applied again in December 2016 to continue the same work. According to Malami, this contradiction invalidates the EFCC’s narrative.

The former minister also claimed he saved Nigeria billions, saying he rejected Monfrini’s alleged demand for 20–40% success fees plus a $5 million upfront payment, opting instead for a local legal firm that charged a transparent 5% success fee.

By his calculation, this decision saved the country between 15% (₦76.8 billion) and 35% ($179.2 million) of the total recovered funds.

Malami insisted that the ongoing probe into the $322.5 million recovery is misguided and maintains that “there is no reasonable basis” to suspect him of abuse of office or money laundering.

Nigerians Shun Dangote-Linked PMS as MRS Fuel Price Rises to ₦945

A growing number of Nigerians are reportedly steering clear of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) supplied from the Dangote Refinery, following higher pump prices at certain filling stations—most notably outlets operated by MRS.

According to reports, the ripple effect is most visible in Abuja, where MRS stations have recorded a significant slump in customer turnout. The chain, owned by Alhaji Sayyu Idris Dantata—half-brother to Dangote Refinery Chairman Aliko Dangote—has been selling petrol at noticeably higher rates than surrounding competitors.

During visits to MRS facilities along the Kubwa Expressway and in Lugbe, petrol was observed selling for ₦945 per litre, about ₦25 more than the ₦920 per litre offered at nearby NNPCL and AA RANO stations, both of which recently slashed their pump prices.

A station manager, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the price gap has driven customers away since early November 2025.

“Patronage has dropped drastically. Queues are shorter because our price is higher. Management circulated a directive to cut the price to ₦920, but it hasn’t been implemented yet. We’re hoping for a review so that sales can pick up,” the manager said.

The decline in traffic comes despite the Dangote Refinery’s ex-depot price standing at ₦826 per litre as of Monday, December 8, 2025—a rate that aligns competitively with other suppliers like Aiteo (₦825) and MENJ (₦835).

Meanwhile, the National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Billy Gillis-Harry, has raised alarm over fluctuating fuel prices, calling it a pressing challenge for the downstream sector.

He warned consumers against chasing the lowest price without considering long-term implications.

“PMS pricing must be stabilized. Nigerians should not be swayed by unusually cheap rates. If prices aren’t realistic, the consequences will surface in the weeks and months ahead,” he cautioned.

Wike Declared PDP National Leader by Loyalists Amid Party Fraction

A fresh wave of controversy has hit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after a pro-Wike faction declared Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, as the party’s “National Leader.”

The announcement was made on Monday by George Turnah, secretary of the South-South caucus loyal to Wike, during an interview on Channels Television. According to Turnah, Wike’s position in President Bola Tinubu’s administration automatically elevates him above all other PDP members currently holding federal appointments.

Turnah defended the faction’s recognition of Wike, pointing to a weekend meeting of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) held at the minister’s Abuja residence—an event that drew strong criticism from the party’s mainstream leadership. He argued that the choice of venue was fully justified given Wike’s alleged status.

“If the PDP had a sitting president, no one would question holding BoT or NEC meetings in the Villa,” he said. “Right now, the highest-ranking PDP figure in the national government is Chief Nyesom Wike. That makes him our national leader, and that is why we met in his residence.”

Turnah also took aim at the faction aligned with former minister Kabiru Turaki, which enjoys the backing of several PDP governors and recently organized a National Convention in Ibadan. He dismissed that gathering as invalid, claiming that numerous states failed to send properly accredited delegates because they did not conduct the mandatory congresses.

The deepening divide between the Wike-aligned bloc and the mainstream PDP leadership highlights the party’s escalating internal struggles, with both sides insisting they represent the legitimate structure of the opposition party.
