Civil Servants in Cross River to Enjoy 20-Day Holiday for Christmas and New Year

The Cross River State Government has announced a 20-day end-of-year leave for all civil and public servants, encouraging full participation in Christmas and New Year celebrations across the state.

The directive, outlined in circular GO/HOS/4/Vol.III/277 and issued by the Head of Service, Mr. Orok Okon, was made available to newsmen.

According to the circular, all workers—except those on essential duties—are expected to be on leave from December 15, 2025, to January 5, 2026.

The circular states, “This approval is to enable civil and public servants to actively participate in the Christmas festivities within the State.

Officers on essential duties are exempted and must remain at their posts to ensure uninterrupted delivery of critical public services. Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Departments should communicate this directive to all staff and ensure full compliance.”

The leave period coincides with one of the state’s most anticipated events: Carnival Calabar, widely regarded as the largest street party in Africa.

This year marks the 20th edition of the annual carnival, a cultural celebration established in 2005 under the Donald Duke administration.

Critical ChatGPT Security Flaws Discovered: NITDA Issues Urgent Advisory

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued a critical advisory warning Nigerians about newly discovered security flaws in OpenAI’s ChatGPT, highlighting potential risks of data exposure and system manipulation.

The advisory, released on Monday, December 8, 2025, stems from research identifying seven vulnerabilities affecting GPT-4o and GPT-5 models.

These flaws could allow attackers to exploit ChatGPT through indirect prompt injections—hidden instructions embedded in webpages, URLs, or online comments that the AI may inadvertently execute during browsing, summarisation, or search activities.

“Malicious actors can craft hidden commands within seemingly legitimate content, which ChatGPT may process without user interaction, leading to unintended actions,” the agency said.

NITDA emphasized that the advisory comes at a time when AI tools are increasingly integrated into business, research, and government operations, raising concerns over AI systems interacting with unsafe content online.

Some vulnerabilities reportedly allow attackers to bypass existing safety mechanisms by disguising harmful instructions under trusted domains. Others exploit markdown-rendering issues, making malicious instructions invisible to users but readable by the AI. In more severe scenarios, attackers could “poison” ChatGPT’s memory, embedding harmful commands that could affect the AI’s future responses.

According to the advisory, potential threats from these vulnerabilities include:

* Execution of unauthorized actions by ChatGPT

* Accidental disclosure of sensitive user data

* Generation of misleading or manipulated outputs

* Long-term behavioral alterations caused by memory poisoning

CERRT.NG, NITDA’s cybersecurity wing, warned that users could trigger attacks passively, without clicking on links or interacting with content, simply when ChatGPT processes compromised webpages or search results.

To reduce risks, NITDA urged individuals, businesses, and government agencies to adopt stronger security measures, including:

* Restricting or disabling browsing and summarisation of untrusted websites in enterprise settings

* Activating features like browsing and memory only when absolutely necessary

* Regularly updating GPT-4o and GPT-5 deployments to the latest patches

The agency stressed that as AI becomes more central to public and private sector operations, proactive cybersecurity practices are essential to safeguard against emerging threats.

Kwankwaso Warns of Nigeria’s Security Crisis, Calls for Urgent Federal Action

Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has voiced serious concerns over the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, highlighting what he sees as the federal government’s inability to effectively tackle the crisis.

In a statement posted on his 𝕏 account on Monday, Kwankwaso lamented the growing reliance on state-level vigilante groups to maintain security, warning that such measures may be exacerbating the problem rather than solving it.

“The recent developments in our country have filled me with deep concern about the state of national affairs,” he wrote. “Having served in key positions within the system, I know that the primary responsibility for ensuring security lies with the Federal Government, working alongside state and local authorities and other stakeholders. Unfortunately, it seems the government is overwhelmed.”

Kwankwaso cautioned that the deployment of vigilante outfits—often lacking proper training—has unintentionally fueled the spread of small arms and light weapons across the nation. He also highlighted a worrying trend of political actors exploiting the situation to form militias, further threatening peace and stability.

The former Minister of Defence also raised alarm over rising ethnic and regional profiling, as well as social media-driven harassment and hate speech. He emphasized that targeting citizens based on their ethnicity or religion could severely undermine national unity.

“In recent times, disturbing reports have emerged of individuals being harassed, arrested, or even tortured in parts of the country simply because of where they come from. Coupled with the rise of social media hate campaigns, these developments pose a grave threat to our national cohesion. The Federal Government must act decisively to halt these trends before they spiral further out of control,” Kwankwaso said.

As Chairman of the Committee on the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons in the past, Kwankwaso described the current proliferation of firearms as “deeply alarming and unacceptable.”

Despite the challenges, he expressed optimism in the leadership of Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), urging the federal government to provide the necessary support to stabilize the nation’s security situation.

NAF Clarifies Role in Foiled Benin Coup, Says Operations Followed ECOWAS Mandate

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has provided clarity on its role in the regional efforts to contain Sunday’s attempted coup in the Benin Republic, emphasizing that all air operations were carried out strictly under the authority of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In a statement issued late Sunday, NAF spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame confirmed that Nigerian aircraft entered Beninese airspace only after receiving approval consistent with ECOWAS security protocols and the operational framework of the ECOWAS Standby Force.

According to him, the deployment was not unilateral but coordinated closely with ECOWAS leadership and relevant Beninese authorities.

Ejodame stressed that the mission reflected Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to supporting peace and constitutional governance in West Africa. He noted that NAF followed all international and regional rules governing such interventions.

He added that the operation formed part of Nigeria’s wider responsibility to help protect democratic institutions and stability across the sub-region.

The attempted coup had earlier sparked confusion and heightened alert in Cotonou. Residents reported hearing bursts of gunfire near the residence of President Patrice Talon, prompting the deployment of armored vehicles around key government installations.

Soon after, a faction calling itself the Military Committee for Refoundation announced on broadcast channels that it had toppled President Talon and dissolved national institutions.

However, the presidency in Lomé quickly refuted these claims, stating that Talon remained secure and that loyal security forces were working to re-establish control.

Benin’s Interior Minister, Alassane Seidou, later addressed the nation on television, assuring citizens that the coup attempt had been successfully quelled and that order was being restored.

Residents of Nawfia in the Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State were thrown into panic on Sunday after armed men launched a deadly assault near the Afor Market Junction, leaving several people dead and others injured.

According to reports, the attackers stormed the busy area without warning and began shooting at residents and passersby.

Those caught in the surprise onslaught either sustained fatal injuries or fled the scene in fear.

A community member, who spoke to newsmen on the condition of anonymity, described the harrowing moment the shooters arrived.

“The armed men drove in suddenly and started firing at everyone they saw. Many people were hit. We still don’t understand why they targeted this place,” he said.

Another eyewitness recounted the chaos that unfolded: “It was terrifying. They appeared like a trained squad—jumped out, shot randomly, and caused total panic. People were running in every direction. It was like a scene from a movie.”

Authorities have since begun investigating the incident. Although the Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, has yet to issue an official statement, a police officer familiar with the case confirmed that security operatives are already trailing the suspects.

“We are on their trail. This kind of violence is unacceptable, and we are committed to ensuring those responsible are arrested,” the source said.

The President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Daniel Okoye, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy in a statement released on Sunday evening. He condemned the attack and assured residents that security agencies had been alerted.

“I received the news with profound shock,” Okoye stated. “The assault at Afor Market Junction resulted in multiple casualties at the hands of unknown gunmen. This is a heartbreaking attempt to destabilize the peace of our community.”

Okoye urged residents to remain calm and cooperative as authorities work to restore order.

Why Obasanjo Says His Classmates Are His Only Clue to His Age

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has once again stated that he remains uncertain about his true age, joking that he can only estimate it by comparing himself with classmates who are still alive.

Obasanjo made the remark on Sunday, December 7, during an edition of the Toyin Falola Interviews, a conversation series hosted by renowned historian Professor Toyin Falola.

The session also featured Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese and former presidential candidate, Professor Kingsley Moghalu.

The former President, who has repeatedly spoken about the mystery surrounding his birth date, said the only benchmark he has are former schoolmates whose ages are known.

“I can’t tell you my exact age,” he said. “But I gauge it from those I attended school with. For instance, the Olubara of Ibara, Oba Jacob Olufemi Omolade, is still alive. I know at least six of my secondary school classmates who are alive today — and none of them is under 90. So you can guess my age from that.”

Why I Created the Presidential Library — Obasanjo

Obasanjo also used the forum to shed light on the inspiration behind the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), saying the institution was established to safeguard Nigeria’s historical memory.

He described poor record-keeping as one of the country’s chronic weaknesses, noting that he created the library to prevent important documents and artifacts from disappearing.

“We have already digitalised over three million materials, and another three million are awaiting digitalisation,” he said. “The idea is to preserve the past, document the present, and ensure these records inspire future generations.”

The former President revealed that the library houses an extensive collection of items from various stages of his life — from childhood to his years in public office.

“My primary school record card is there,” he said. “So are my secondary school files, manuscripts of books I wrote — even the ones I wrote in prison. We’ve kept everything, including crops of maize I planted during my incarceration.”

He added that the archive also includes deeply personal materials, such as a letter he wrote to General Sani Abacha after losing his son in an accident, and another letter written to his wife while he was in prison.

Obasanjo maintained that the Presidential Library was his attempt to correct a national flaw.

“One of our biggest failings in this society is that we don’t keep records. Institutional memory is always weak. The library is my way of addressing that,” he said.

Protests Erupt in Katsina Over Unresolved Electricity Outage

Four communities in Katsina State erupted in protest on Sunday over a power outage that residents say has plunged them into darkness for six straight months, crippling essential services and worsening security challenges.

Hundreds of demonstrators converged on Barhim, demanding the immediate restoration of electricity to Abuja Quarters, Barhim Layout, Sha’iskawa and Tigirmis Quarters. The crowd marched peacefully with placards, insisting that government officials must “end the suffering now.”

Usman Mohammad-Alqasim, who spoke on behalf of the affected communities, said the blackout has pushed thousands of households into hardship with no explanation from authorities.

“For half a year, our communities have been cut off from the national grid,” he told reporters. “No one has given us a clear reason for this kind of neglect.”

Illegal Structures Blamed for Outage

Mohammad-Alqasim explained that the crisis began after the discovery of illegal buildings under a 33kV transmission line — structures the state government initially ordered demolished.

However, he said the demolition exercise was suddenly halted after the intervention of Batagarawa Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Yahaya Kawo.

“Some buildings were removed at first, then everything stopped,” he said. “The chairman claimed funds had been released to relocate the power line, but months later, there’s no sign of work on the ground.”

He added that, ironically, the houses originally marked for demolition now have electricity restored, while the larger communities remain in complete darkness.

Darkness Breeds Insecurity

The Village Head of Barhim Layout, Sirajo Aminu, described the six-month blackout as a humanitarian concern, saying the absence of electricity has emboldened criminals and strained basic living conditions.

“Insecurity has worsened since the power went out,” he said. “We’ve recorded more cases of theft, and many households struggle to get water. Without power, even simple daily routines have become difficult.”

Aminu called on the state government to step in urgently, not only to restore power but also to provide essential infrastructure such as schools, healthcare facilities and proper drainage.

Authorities Promise Action

Residents vowed to sustain their protests until electricity is restored, accusing the authorities of allowing an avoidable situation to linger unnecessarily.

Responding to the unrest, Batagarawa Council Chairman, Yahaya Kawo, acknowledged the grievances and assured the communities that a solution was already in motion.

“We are working on it,” he said, promising that the issue would be addressed “this week.”

Details Emerge On How Nigeria Military Stopped Coup In Benin Republic

A coup attempt in the Republic of Benin was put down on Sunday after the country’s government sought urgent military support from Nigeria, prompting a swift regional response that forced the mutineers to retreat.

According to senior officials, President Bola Tinubu authorised the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to secure Benin’s airspace immediately after President Patrice Talon requested assistance to counter soldiers who had seized the national broadcaster and regrouped at a nearby military base.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the intervention, noting that Nigeria acted only after receiving a formal request from Cotonou. He said the mission was conducted strictly under Benin’s command.

Nigerian Fighter Jets, Ground Troops Deter Mutineers

Security sources revealed that the presence of Nigerian fighter jets proved decisive.

The aircraft reportedly flew low over key locations and dropped warning explosives, forcing the coup plotters to abandon the state television station and withdraw from a major military camp.

Simultaneously, Nigerian ground troops were dispatched toward Benin’s border areas, with battalions stationed in Ikorodu, Badagry and Owode mobilised for rapid action should the situation escalate.

The Nigerian presidency said the deployments were meant for “surveillance and rapid intervention” and carried out in coordination with Benin’s military leadership.

Sources added that Nigerian forces remain on standby in case the mutineers attempt to regroup.

President Talon Confirms Attempt Defeated

In a televised national address, President Talon announced that the coup attempt had been contained. He expressed sympathy for those affected, including individuals believed to have been taken captive as the mutineers fled.

“I extend my condolences to the victims of this senseless adventure,” Talon said. “We will spare no effort to safely recover those still held by the fleeing insurgents.”

Earlier in the day, Cotonou had been gripped by bursts of gunfire as heavily armed soldiers stormed the national broadcaster. A group calling itself the Military Committee for Refoundation, led by Colonel Tigri Pascal, appeared on state TV to proclaim the dissolution of government institutions, the suspension of the constitution, and the closure of borders. The faction cited worsening insecurity in northern Benin and complaints over the treatment of fallen troops.

ECOWAS Endorses Regional Action

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) quickly backed Benin and Nigeria’s actions. The regional bloc ordered the deployment of a standby force composed of personnel from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, denouncing the attempted takeover as a direct assault on democratic order.

The thwarted putsch adds to a troubling series of military takeovers that have rattled West Africa in recent years, including those in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Niger.

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, confirmed that all operations requested by Benin were executed promptly. “We carried out every directive of the Commander-in-Chief,” he said.

Tinubu Praises Nigerian Forces

President Tinubu later commended the military for acting decisively to stabilise a neighbouring democracy.

“Today, our armed forces stood firm as protectors of constitutional authority in the Republic of Benin, at the request of its legitimate government,” Tinubu said. “Their conduct aligns with the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. Nigeria stands solidly with the people and government of our sister nation.”
