Authorities report that the girl’s parents, along with a woman identified as Ezenwanyi—believed to have orchestrated and facilitated the union—are also in police custody following widespread public complaints.

The incident has sparked outrage both locally and on social media, with many citizens condemning the act and urging stricter enforcement of laws protecting children from abuse and early marriage.

Among the victims are a 16-year-old boy and six young women aged between 17 and 23.

Armed Attack Shakes Community

According to local resident Suleiman Shuaibu, the attackers, armed with AK-47 rifles, stormed two homes around 9:47 pm, opening fire and forcing residents to flee. Community vigilantes tried to confront the bandits but were quickly overpowered by their superior firepower.

Shuaibu confirmed the distressing news, noting that many residents left their homes in panic after the violent incident. “It was around 9:53 pm when I received a call from Gidan-Bijimi. Bandits had invaded the village and abducted six young girls. Sadly, my cousin sister is among those taken,” he said.

No Contact from Kidnappers Yet

Efforts to reach SP Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, for comment were unsuccessful as she did not respond to calls or messages at the time of reporting.

Heightened Security Measures Across the Capital

The abduction comes shortly after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered stricter security measures across Abuja. In response, a joint operation involving the police, DSS, military, and other security agencies has been deployed to key entry points and borders in the territory.

Speaking on Thursday during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, Ndume argued that Nigeria’s security strategy should prioritize the safety of communities rather than individuals. He questioned the rationale behind the heavy concentration of armed personnel around politicians who do not hold top-tier positions.

Recalling a personal experience, Ndume said, “I went to one of my colleagues’ houses for dinner and saw more than ten policemen stationed there. He is my junior in the National Assembly. Seeing them, you might think the President or Vice President was visiting.”

The senator also criticized the scale of security arrangements for the presidency. “Even the president’s convoy is too large. The approach should be to secure locations first. When the president travels, the security can be withdrawn. If Abuja is secure, the president can move about even at night. This is how it works in many other countries,” Ndume explained.

He warned that prioritizing personal security over public safety creates an environment where ordinary citizens are left exposed. “When protection is focused solely on personalities, the common people become vulnerable—and that’s a problem,” he added.

The governor sounded the alarm on Thursday during an interactive session with journalists at the Government House in Lokoja.

The briefing followed an emergency meeting of the State Security Council and extensive consultations with security chiefs and traditional rulers.

Ododo acknowledged that the surge in violent crime is part of a wider national security crisis, stressing that his administration would neither succumb to criminal intimidation nor entertain ransom negotiations.

“Insecurity is no longer a localised challenge; it’s happening across the world,” Ododo said.

“But we will not fold our arms and allow criminals to overrun our state. Intelligence reports indicate that major commanders of these bandit groups moved into Kogi within the last three days. We will not wait to be attacked—we will take the battle to them.”

He added that residents must remain alert, noting that public sensitisation and proactive security operations would form a key part of the state’s containment strategy.

Following the council meeting, the governor confirmed that the State Security Council had approved the immediate enforcement of security timing restrictions across the state to help curb potential threats.

Amid growing tension and widespread rumours of an attack in Lokoja earlier in the day, the government moved quickly to calm nerves.

Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, issued a rebuttal dismissing the viral reports of a bandits’ invasion of the capital city.

Fanwo described the circulating claims as “baseless panic” fueled by mischief makers.

“The satanic panic being spread is without any foundation and should be ignored,” he said.

“Our people should go about their legitimate activities without fear. The government and security agencies are working tirelessly to ensure every resident of Kogi is safe.”
