Tinubu Halts South Africa, Angola Trip Over Kebbi Kidnapping, Kwara Church Attack

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has put aside his planned diplomatic engagements in Johannesburg and Luanda, choosing instead to focus on the growing security challenges at home.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President opted to postpone the trip in order to receive comprehensive security updates on two disturbing incidents: the abduction of students in Kebbi State and the armed attack on worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.

Tinubu’s decision follows an appeal from the Kwara State governor, prompting the President to order an intensified security presence in Eruku and across the entire Ekiti Local Government Area. He also instructed the Nigeria Police Force to pursue the attackers and restore calm to the affected communities.

The President had been scheduled to depart Abuja today for the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa, after which he was expected to travel to Angola for the 7th AU-EU Summit. However, the recent wave of violence—in Kebbi, where 24 schoolgirls were kidnapped, and in Kwara, where bandits struck a church congregation—compelled him to suspend his international itinerary.

Tinubu is now awaiting detailed reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi on his behalf, as well as briefings from the police and the Department of State Services on the Kwara attack.

Reaffirming his position, the President ordered security agencies to intensify all efforts toward locating and safely rescuing the abducted schoolgirls, underscoring that bringing them home remains an urgent national priority.

Police Seal PDP National Headquarters Amid Deepening Leadership Crisis

Tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reached a boiling point on Wednesday as operatives of the Nigeria Police Force sealed off the party’s National Headquarters at Wadata Plaza, Abuja. The development follows escalating clashes between rival factions within the party.

The confrontation reportedly stems from a leadership tussle between supporters of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and the faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The crisis intensified after both factions scheduled separate meetings at the party’s national secretariat on Tuesday, resulting in physical altercations.

Video footage from the scene shows police officers reinforcing the entrance with barbed wire as security measures were heightened to prevent further clashes.

Governor Makinde, speaking to journalists at the headquarters, insisted that his faction is committed to defending democracy and the integrity of the PDP. “We are here not just to defend our party, but to uphold democracy in Nigeria. We will not vacate the premises, no matter how tense the situation becomes,” he declared.

As the standoff escalated, police reportedly deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, highlighting the severity of the crisis within one of Nigeria’s major political parties.

In response, the Wike-led faction took decisive action, expelling Governor Makinde, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, and several others, citing anti-party activities. Party executives in Oyo, Bauchi, Ekiti, Zamfara, Edo, and Lagos were also dissolved.

Acting National Chairman Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman presented the expulsion memo during the party’s 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, explaining that the affected members’ disregard for court rulings had tarnished the party’s reputation. Those expelled also included former Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, Senator Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, and Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja.

The PDP leadership crisis, already described as one of the most severe in recent times, shows no immediate signs of abating, as both factions dig in their heels in a battle over party control.

ASUU Rejects FG Proposal, Begins Two-Week Strike Over Unmet Demands

ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over 15-Year Lecturer Salary Freeze in Nigeria

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has sounded a stern warning that a nationwide strike could be imminent if the Federal Government does not address the longstanding stagnation of university lecturers’ salaries.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, November 18, the Benin Zone of ASUU highlighted what it described as the 15-year freeze on lecturers’ wages, emphasizing the urgent need for action.

Government Inaction Frustrates Lecturers

Prof. Monday Igbafen, Zonal Coordinator, condemned the government’s handling of the salary review, describing it as a “blatant unwillingness” to resolve issues critical to the stability of public universities.

Addressing journalists alongside regional university leaders, he stressed that while some non-monetary aspects of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement had been addressed, the salary and welfare components remain largely neglected.

“The Federal Government has yet again failed to utilize the one-month window given to conclude negotiations, leaving lecturers trapped in the same 2009 salary structure,” Igbafen said. “The proposed increment is merely a drop in the ocean and does not address the urgent realities faced by our academics.”

Professors Earning Less Than $400 Monthly

Highlighting the stark reality, Igbafen noted that a Nigerian professor today earns less than $400 per month—a figure he called “a scandalous undervaluation of scholars” that fuels brain drain and industrial unrest. He described the 15-year salary freeze as “inhuman, unjust, and a direct threat to the public university system.”

He further criticized key government officials, including the Minister of Education, for their positions on the issue, describing them as “antithetical to a genuine and swift resolution.”

Resources Are Available, But Political Will Is Lacking

Citing official revenue figures, the ASUU zonal coordinator dismissed claims that the strike is due to a lack of funds. According to Igbafen, state governments received ₦3.92 trillion in 2022, increasing to ₦5.81 trillion in 2024—a rise of over 62%. Similarly, federal revenues grew from ₦3.42 trillion in 2022 to ₦4.65 trillion in 2024, marking an increase of more than 70%.

“This crisis is not a question of resources,” he said. “It is a question of political will.”

Benin Zone Ready for National Directive

Igbafen confirmed that the Benin Zone of ASUU is fully prepared to comply with any decision from the union’s National Executive Council regarding the resumption of the suspended strike.

“We are ready to act on the NEC’s directive to resume strike action if the government fails to meet its obligations within the one-month window,” he concluded.

Deadly ISWAP Attack in Borno: Four CJTF Members Killed, Soldiers Missing

Tension has deepened once again in Borno State following a deadly raid on a military base in Mayenti, Bama Local Government Area, where terrorists struck late Sunday, killing four members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and leaving four soldiers unaccounted for.

Security operatives told Premium Times that the insurgents—believed to be fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP)—rode into the area on motorcycles and attempted to capture the military position. Mayenti, located close to Dara Jamal, has endured a string of violent attacks, including the massacre of more than 60 residents in September.

Troops under Operation Hadin Kai reportedly engaged the attackers in a prolonged firefight, neutralizing several insurgents before forcing the rest to retreat. Despite the military’s effort, the ambush resulted in the deaths of four CJTF personnel, and the whereabouts of four soldiers remain unknown.

As they fled, the terrorists set fire to two trucks belonging to the Borno State Ministry of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Resettlement. They also murdered four labourers working in the vicinity, further compounding the devastation.

The attack unfolded only hours after the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, concluded an operational tour of Borno State — underscoring the unpredictability and reach of insurgent elements in the region.

The Mayenti assault also came on the heels of the release of a chilling ISWAP video showing the execution of Brigadier-General Samaila Uba. The senior officer had earlier survived an ambush on Saturday but became isolated from his troops while waiting for reinforcements. ISWAP militants later captured and killed him, sparking widespread condemnation across Nigeria.

Zulum Renews Pressure for High-Tech Warfare Tools

Responding to the escalating hostilities, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum doubled down on his call for the deployment of drones and advanced surveillance technologies. He argued that Nigeria’s security forces need modern tools to track and target terrorist enclaves across Sambisa Forest, the Mandara Mountains and the Lake Chad basin.

Zulum also urged the Federal Government to boost funding for the military and the Multinational Joint Task Force, stressing that defeating terrorism requires “a united national resolve.”

Political Reactions and Growing International Scrutiny

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar described the killing of Brigadier-General Uba as a dangerous turning point in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency. He accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing to secure the country and urged the President to “act decisively or step aside,” warning that Nigeria “cannot continue on this trajectory.”

The recent surge in ISWAP operations has drawn global concern, heightened further by remarks from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who sharply criticized Nigeria’s handling of extremist attacks.

The renewed violence comes only weeks after President Tinubu appointed a fresh lineup of military service chiefs — a decision many hoped would reinvigorate the counterinsurgency campaign. Instead, the latest attacks have reignited public anxiety over whether Nigeria can stem the resurgence of terrorist activity in the North-East.

Injury Forces Osimhen Out of CAF Awards Trip; Okoronkwo Questions Final Shortlist

Victor Osimhen’s bid for a second consecutive CAF Player of the Year honour has been halted—this time not by competition, but by injury.

The Super Eagles star, who was expected in Rabat for tonight’s ceremony, has instead been summoned to Istanbul, where Galatasaray’s medical team will conduct an MRI scan on the hamstring problem he suffered during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying run.

Osimhen, a 2023 winner and once again among the final three nominees alongside Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi, was forced off during Nigeria’s defeat to DR Congo in Sunday’s African play-off final. He lasted only 45 minutes before officials decided the suspected hamstring strain was too risky to ignore.

The setback came just days after the striker produced one of his finest performances in national colours—an extra-time brace against Gabon that propelled Nigeria into the final and pushed his international goal tally to 31.

Okoronkwo Reacts After Missing Out on CAF Women’s POY Final Shortlist

While Osimhen’s night is overshadowed by injury, another Nigerian star is dealing with a different kind of disappointment.

Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has expressed her frustration after failing to make the final shortlist for the 2025 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award, despite a remarkable year for both club and country.

Okoronkwo had been widely considered a frontrunner after appearing in the initial 10-player shortlist. But when CAF announced the final trio—Nigeria’s Rasheedat Ajibade, Morocco’s Ghizlaine Chebbak, and Sanaâ Mssoudy—her name was conspicuously absent.

Taking to Instagram, she delivered a composed but pointed message: “CAF’s decision is noted, but my focus stays on the pitch where recognition is earned, not awarded. Awards don’t always reflect reality, but the pitch never lies.”

A Season of Influence That Stats Alone Don’t Capture

Okoronkwo’s omission has stirred debate, especially given the breadth of her impact during the award window of January 6 to October 15, 2025.

She was instrumental in Nigeria’s record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph, closing the tournament with two goals, six assists, and a Player of the Match display in the final against Morocco—where she scored once and created two more in a dramatic 3–2 victory.

Her dominance extended to club football. With AFC Toronto, Okoronkwo became one of the architects of the team’s Northern Super League Supporters’ Shield win. She finished the regular season with eight goals and seven assists—no player in the league created more—and provided the match-winning assist against Montreal Roses to secure the title.

Among the 45 foreign players in the NSL, she made history as the first African to claim the league’s inaugural shield and one of only six players from outside North America to achieve the milestone.

Despite her powerful résumé—over 20 goal contributions across all competitions and two major trophies—CAF opted for other finalists. Critics argue her influence far outweighed that of players like Temwa Chawinga (15 goals, 3 assists for Kansas City Current) and Barbra Banda (8 goals, 2 assists for Orlando Pride), neither of whom won silverware within the eligible period.

Awards Night Begins at 6 p.m. Nigerian Time

The CAF Awards ceremony will proceed tonight in Rabat, Morocco, starting at 6 p.m. Nigerian time—but without one of Africa’s biggest football stars present, and with one of its most in-form women’s players watching from afar.

Nigerian Man Bags 50-Year Jail Term for Posing as Nollywood Actor to Scam UK Victim

A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced Osaibovo Charles to 50 years imprisonment after finding him guilty of defrauding a United Kingdom resident of ÂŁ15,000.

The judgment, delivered on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, by Justice Ismail Ijelu, brought an end to a protracted trial that began after Charles was arrested and prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal Directorate I.

According to the EFCC, Charles posed online as Nollywood star Fredrick Leonard and lured his victim, Miss Shenika Garati, into sending money under the guise of funding an alleged movie project.

Prosecutors said he also attempted to obtain an additional ÂŁ38,000 from her during the scam, which ran between February and August 2022.

During the trial, the EFCC presented two witnesses and several incriminating documents, while the defence put forward one witness in an effort to establish Charles’s innocence.

Despite his not-guilty plea, the court held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was overwhelming.

Justice Ijelu ruled that the EFCC successfully proved the charges of conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, stealing, possession of fraudulent documents, and money laundering. However, Charles was acquitted on the count of retaining proceeds of crime.

He received the following sentences:

* 14 years for conspiracy to obtain money by false pretence

* 14 years for obtaining money by false pretence

* 5 years for stealing

* 14 years for possessing fraudulent documents

* 3 years for money laundering

The judge ordered that all sentences run concurrently, resulting in a total of 50 years in prison.

In addition, Charles was directed to refund ÂŁ15,000 to Miss Garati, the amount established as part of the unlawful transactions.

The ruling marks another victory for the EFCC as it continues its crackdown on cybercrime and romance scams targeting foreign victims.

Insecurity: Mr. Macaroni Calls Tinubu Administration “Irresponsible”

Nigerian comedian and social activist Mr. Macaroni has taken aim at President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of failing to curb the escalating insecurity across the country.

Reacting to recent incidents — including the abduction of schoolchildren and the killing of a military general — the comedian expressed outrage on his social media page, saying the government has not shown the urgency required to secure the nation.

Mr. Macaroni questioned why terrorist groups continue to occupy parts of the country despite repeated promises by the current administration to restore peace and safety.

In a strongly worded post, he wrote: “This is a very useless and irresponsible government feasting on the blood of innocent Nigerians! School children have been kidnapped, a general killed, and everything is fine??? Why should any part of this country be occupied by terrorists? In any civilized country, Tinubu should resign!”

Meanwhile, fear has spread through Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State following the abduction of Reverend Father Markus Samari from his residence in the Kuse-Gudu community.

During the attack, one Emmanuel Yaro was reportedly shot dead.

According to Daily Trust, a resident identified as Salihu Mahmud said the invasion occurred around 5:37 p.m. on Sunday, shortly after the priest returned from church.

TG Omori Claims Death Threats After Comment on Same-Sex Relationships

Nigerian music video director ThankGod Omori Jesam, popularly known as TG Omori, says he has been receiving death threats following his recent remarks on same-sex relationships and a subsequent media report he believes put him at greater risk.

The controversy began over the weekend after Omori shared a brief but controversial post on 𝕏, writing: “Having same gender sex is evil.”

The statement quickly went viral, drawing intense backlash and sparking wide debate across social platforms.

According to Omori, the situation escalated further when a digital magazine published an article suggesting he was using the online uproar to promote his luxury eyewear line. He said the publication not only misrepresented his intentions but also worsened the hostility directed at him.

Omori claimed that since the article was released, he has been inundated with threatening messages at all hours, leaving him fearful for his safety.

Condemning the publication in a post quoting the article, he wrote: “This is a media house trying to set me up and risk my life by gaslighting a global community they serve to blacklist me for speaking my truth in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

US UN Forum: Nicki Minaj Amplifies Call to Protect Christians in Nigeria

American rap icon Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, widely known as Nicki Minaj, has issued a passionate plea for international action to stop what she described as the ongoing persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

Speaking at a United States Mission to the United Nations event focused on ending religious violence, Minaj emphasized that her advocacy was grounded in humanity, not political alignment or division. She stressed that no community should suffer attacks simply because of its beliefs.

“This isn’t about choosing sides,” Minaj declared. “It’s about confronting injustice wherever it appears. It’s about standing firm for the values I’ve always believed in—unity, dignity, and the right for everyone to practice their faith without fear.”

The rapper also expressed appreciation to U.S. President Donald Trump for drawing attention to the situation, noting his calls for heightened international pressure to address violence against Christians in Nigeria.

Minaj referenced Trump’s recent warnings, in which he labelled Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over reported religious attacks. In earlier remarks, Trump urged Nigerian authorities to act swiftly, even suggesting potential U.S. intervention if the violence continued.
