The Federal Government has officially cancelled the Independence Anniversary parade that was scheduled to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day on October 1, 2025.
In a statement released on Monday, Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information & Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), confirmed the cancellation.
Imohiosen said the move is “in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary,” and that all other programs planned for the celebration will continue as scheduled.
He added that the government regrets any inconvenience caused by the cancellation and appealed for understanding and cooperation from Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests.

A government-signed press release distributed Monday evening confirmed that the parade’s cancellation is effective immediately.
What’s Changing and What Remains
* The parade—often held in Abuja—is the most visible component of the Independence Day celebrations. Its cancellation marks a departure from tradition this year.
* However, the Federal Government emphasized that other events tied to the Independence Anniversary will still take place.
* The public holiday declared for October 1 remains in effect.
